62 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2025 Pickleball is a brutal game, and often a cruel one — wait. No, that's football. Spring is in the air, good people of the Four Seasons campus! And we all know how warmer weather and brightening breezes can get the ol' juices f lowing in our pins and pipes, don't we? Check out our very own, incredibly talented tutor Nancy Hessin introducing the wiles and wending ways of the bang and the dink to a callow new crop of soon-to-be 'ballers on a recent chilly Saturday morning. We encourage everyone to come on out to the courts at The Lodge on any morning and ask about getting into the game. It's amazing how much fun you can have knocking around a wiff le ball and yelling at your neighbors. You're bound to find some familiar faces perched on our brand spanking new bleachers (thank you, Steering Committee and Facilities) and (even if you don't necessarily want to) you're likely to be given a full briefing on how to play, what to wear, who to beat, when to lob, where to get balls, and which are the best players (hint: it's either Jim or Nancy or Bill or Kim or Karen or Dave or Shel or Kel or Lynn or Wes or Schmedley or Tony or Jules or Winifred or Tracy or Rob. Not Biff, though. He's terrible). Spring also stirs a spirit of renewal in our souls, doesn't it? It's said that as the winter snows recede, hope springs eternal in the human breast, and as tournament season draws near, you need look no further afield than the heart housings of just about every pickleballer out there for aspirations of greatness sought in the bounds between kitchen and baseline. Gold? Silver? Could this be my year? Will Synvisc be my savior? Can my nano-knee make a man of me? Football can be brutal, yes. Hey, let's face it, life itself can be hard sometimes. The thing about pickleball is, it's fun. That's why we play. You laugh, you yell, you run a little, grunt sometimes, win, lose, and live to serve another day. We're so lucky to live here and to share these times with each other and with our friends and neighbors in Four Seasons. We'll be out there until some doctor tells us he has to amputate. Probably longer. Come on out and join us soon, friends. ~ Mike McGrath, mjmsmailbox@ yahoo.com Pickleball Richard, Nancy, Crystal, and Elliot were bundled up, but eager to get the basics down and get their challenge game on point! Look where we can sit now! L-R, bottom row: Tony, John, Gary, Sandra, Karen, Lydia, Lou. L-R, middle row: Karen Rose, Maggie, Jimmy, Dave, James, Nancy, Rick, Maria, Julie, Marty, and Tom.
