26 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2025 | Yes, we're thinking about Christmas in May! Each year the Sewing Etc. Club is given a challenge to sew 200 Christmas stockings and 50 cradle quilts for Camp Pendleton. After just one full-day workshop, over 50 stockings were produced. And, all 50 cradle quilts, with little pillows, were turned in. It's a good thing the club previously arranged to have professional maintenance services for the Clubhouse sewing machines! Because the professional was going to be in the community and expected to have extra time, he was able to provide maintenance services for a number of machines owned by club members. As the list of members who wanted machines serviced was longer than expected, he offered to return another time to work on their machines and to present a class to discuss basic machine tips. Lessons learned: 1. Change your sewing machine needles after eight or nine hours of use. The cost of needles is less than parts and labor for fixing parts damaged by worn out needles. 2. Use the right needle for the project. 3. Don't use thread on wooden spools or on foam spools. Thread has a shelf life, and these spools are outdated. A second-class session with techniques, and more care and maintenance tips is in the works. Once the class session is scheduled, Sewing Etc. Club members will be given the opportunity to have their machines serviced. If time allows any community members who sign up in advance will be able to sign up for maintenance. Typically, the owner of sewing machine maintenance and repair company schedules appointments and goes to the resident's address to work. Sewing Etc. Club members are also busy with donations to Project Linus (highly rated charity) which "provides blankets to children 0-18 in the United States who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need."
