34 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2025 | Woodchucks Happy Mothers' Day to all! Our Woodchucks have been hard at work, as always — tackling community projects, personal builds, and a few "Honey-Do" lists along the way. Mike Noonan took on a big task and crafted 20 planter boxes for the Garden Club. Yours truly recently wrapped up an RV interior remodel, while Larry Kummer continues to turn out beautiful wooden pens for the Wounded Veterans Project. Alan Belise is nearly finished with a mechanical, articulated marching man, and, using our shop lathe, Bill Huyett turned a stunning poplar bowl for his wife. Robert "Murf " Haugen completed a radio-controlled scale model of a 1950s Chris-Craft Speedster, and Scott Griffith is building a Queen Anne Lowboy destined to become a cherished family heirloom. Our president, Tom Murphy, has started building around 50 doll cradles for the Camp Pendleton Holiday Toy Drive — a project close to our hearts. Many more members are busy with incredible projects—we wish we had space to mention them all! Interested in joining the fun and making some sawdust of your own? All three tables were booked for beginner instruction every Sunday from 4 to 5 pm. Cliff Singh, Jay Dangcil and Babu Patrose are serving as instructors. Plans are to continue these beginner sessions through April and May on Sundays from 4 to 5 pm. The ball launcher robot machine is also set up for stroke practice during this time. It was very heartening to get a letter of appreciation from new member Tom Crispo that read, "As a new member I wanted to say THANKS for the fun and informative info/ instructions/ practice session and very nice helpful members. Looking forward to future games as my schedule now permits." Cliff Singh, Vice President of the Table Tennis Club, who also happens to hold a PhD in Exercise Physiology & Biomechanics has the following advice for new players… You have committed yourself to playing a game highly recommended by the medical community to improve your general health and fitness as an individual. e instructors in the Table Tennis Club will give you the best series of skills to make you a comfortable performer at this highly skilled game with amusement, fun and enjoyment. We stress your safety as an important asset to learning a new skill. I strongly believe in all sports, the day you come to play is the day you perform at your best level. ere is no such thing as a perfect way and, as a competitor, you do the best you can playing an opponent who is also competitive and cray and creative. Key points in learning a new skill: Getting Started: Make sure the skill either solves a problem or is directly applicable to your life. Learning the Basics: Find a way to apply what you are learning as quickly as possible. Get Better: Practice to improve at your weak areas Staying with it: Practice as oen as you can, and play with different opponents to increase your success. "Practice does not make you perfect, only performance practice makes for perfect performance. Be kind to yourself when you are learning to play for fun, or when you compete it's exciting to win, and you also learn from your losses as well. Swing away with confidence! A reminder to all that we will be holding our Spring Fling Taco Party on Sun., May 4, from 4 to 8 pm in Abravanel Hall. Four Table Tennis tables will be set up for play starting at 4 pm.
