Your OH Travel Club Board, Adele, Lynn, Amy, Jeannine and Callie Written by Amy Blount and approved by the Travel Club Board Travel Club Yiddish Club The world, and particularly the U.S.A., has become a more interesting place, Kosher Cuisine wise. We have discovered there are so many Kosher and Israeli restaurants in the U.S. where we least expect them, that we would like to share some with you. The coasts, California, Florida, and New York, have the largest selection. You may never visit them, but it is fun to know they exist. For instance, "Gold Schnitzel in Renton, WA." Holy smoke Kosher in Nashville, TN, "Pallas Kosher in Texas, "Mendel's, Kansas City BBQ in Ohio, "Kosher Haus," in South Dakota and Vegetarian restaurants such as "Anna's Kitchen" in Roselawn, OH. The only Jewish restaurant to be found locally is "Rhys and Grind" on South Coast Highway which may not be Kosher. In New York, Brooklyn has "Izzy Barbeque Addiction" and "Essen Deli" is in Flatbush. There are also many Kosher Italian, French and Indian spots to be found. Miami has "Zak the Baker," "Rustico" a very upscale dairy restaurant in Surfside, "Hadekel" featuring Israeli cuisine in North Miami Beach and "Sushi and Tappas" serves a Kosher Fusion of Japanese and Peruvian dishes. There are some restaurants that were not originally Kosher, but because of the demand, they have become Kosher certified, "Neya" is an example of this as is "Ostrow Brasserie" founded by French born chef Olivia Ostrow. San Diego boast "Prager Brothers" Kosher Bakery" and Hamitbach for fine dining. As researching this article, it occurred to us that many people don't know the rules of Kashrut. Here is what the Torah tells us. 1. Mammals must have split hooves and chew their cud. 2. Fish must have fins and removeable scales. 3. Kosher species of meat and foul must be ritually slaughtered in a prescribed manner. 4. Birds that are not predatory are allowed. 5. All of this means pork, rabbit, eagles, owls, catfish and reptiles are prohibited. 6. Meat and dairy products cannot be served or processed together. 7. Mostly all insects are prohibited, except for a small number of Locust species, (really!) Now you all know as much as we could find on this subject, the descriptions of these restaurants, help us delve into the way the culture or Jewish and Israeli cuisine in alive and well, all over America. There are three things that we Jews Love: Our kids, our parents, and a good restaurant. Written by Selma Leighton
