18 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | JUNE 2025 By Suzette Strauss, Resident Because I am oen working at my desk, I am always looking for quick workouts that can burn calories and increase blood ow. About a month ago, I came upon a video of a couple swinging their arms. From experience, I know that when the arms are in action mode during walking or running, my heart rate increases and so does my calorie burn count. Aer watching the video several times, I gave it a try. I am sold on this workout! e goal is to perform each set of 50 repetitions; however, I recommend building up to the 50 as you become more comfortable with each movement and your stamina increases. Maybe start at 10 to 15. Begin by standing with your feet about shoulder width apart and engage your core by gently pulling your belly button toward your spine. A strong core makes for better balance. e rst set is simply swinging your arms from hanging straight at your sides to straight up over your head and back down. If you have a limited range of motion, go as far as it is comfortable. ey can also be done sitting on an armless chair, but be sure you are stable. e next set is similar, as the arms move in the same motion just alternating turns to swing. Right arm up rst and le arm begins as right arm is coming down, like swinging your arms as you walk only ending your forward swing at the top above your head. To add to this set, if you are able, you can rise slightly on your toes as each arm reaches the top. e third set I call the swinging hug. Arms are straight out at either side and swing in for a big hug. Each time switch which hand ends up on top for more mental engagement. And, of course, smile, you're being hugged. e last set is like pushing water side to side as in a swimming pool. Both arms start on the right side and push with your palms facing le then on the return, push with the palms facing to the right. I nd a slightly wider stance and more tightening of the stomach muscles for this is appropriate. My back loves this one. Aside from feeling great aer doing this, I decided to ask 'Professor Google' about the benets of arm swinging. As I expected, arm swinging oers numerous benets, including improved posture, enhanced balance, increased blood ow, and increased exibility. It also has been shown to contribute to better core stability, improved cardiovascular health, and can aid in burning calories. And I might add, rming up the triceps. YAY! Let's swing it! Get Into the Swing Of It!
