12 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2025 | Among the issues that arise in Sun Lakes, the two the Safety Advisory Committee gives priority are trespassing and traffic. Our goal is to make recommendations to the Master Board which will enhance both safety and security for all Sun Lakes residents. Regarding trespassing, we work closely with Mike Romero and Jonathan Roman of Securitas, and Jason Ewals and Mark Schleiden of FirstService to be kept aware of issues that arise. The ever-growing population of homeless outside our perimeter walls continues to be a focus for us. Even though jurisdiction outside our community is restricted, we have been successful recently in having an encampment moved which was very near the second tee area on the Executive Golf Course. This was with the assistance of Banning PD and Riverside County Code Enforcement. Even though BPD is short staffed, Officer Rodriguez and Police Chief Avila have been helpful in responding to requests from us regarding nearby encampment intrusions. Mike Romero and the Securitas staff remain committed to responding to calls from residents regarding trespassing and/or suspicious behavior. Homelessness arises for a variety of reasons. It could be the result of job loss or other financial problems, or it can be due to alcohol and drug addiction or mental health issues. There are many organizations nearby who are committed to helping those who are less fortunate than we are: H.E.L.P., Faith In Action, Carol's Kitchen, Banning Office of Homeless Services, and many others. Volunteers at these organizations work tirelessly to help the needy and we applaud their efforts. The unhoused that Sun Lakers need to be aware of are the addicts and those with mental health issues. The Safety Advisory Committee urges all Sun Lakers to be vigilant and report any trespassers or suspicious behavior to Banning Police Department first, then to our Security. Regarding traffic issues in Sun Lakes, we as an HOA are limited in what we can do because we are a private community. The streets here are private so the police department cannot impose citations for violations. The main concern here is speeding and running stop signs. We as a committee can only urge drivers to maintain caution and obey signs and drive defensively. Securitas can cite vehicles for parking violations and we as a committee can impose fines for multiple violations. We ask all residents, especially the new ones, to become aware of and obey Sun Lakes Rules and Regulations regarding parking and safe driving. If you see something, say something Keep your garage doors closed Keep your dogs on a leash Drive safely, don't speed and STOP AT STOP SIGNS ~ Michael Volz, vmv1950@aol.com Safety Advisory
