| LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2025 | 35 Let's talk plastics! Plastic pollution is a significant environmental issue, with statistics revealing alarming trends in production, waste, and impact on ecosystems. Globally, billions of tons of plastic are produced annually, a large portion of which becomes waste, with only a small percentage recycled. This waste ends up in landfills, incinerators, and, tragically, in our oceans. Here in Solera many of us are environmentalists when we pack up our plastic bottles and take them to the Sunshine Club's drop- off area beside the Mail Room. Once the Sunshine Club processes the items dropped off, the volunteers take the plastic to a recycling center where it is sorted, baled into compressed 1000-1500 lb. rectangular blocks and wrapped with wire. The bales are sold to recyclers (commonly referred to as reclaimers), who will process the material into recycled plastic. Recycled plastic is typically processed into new products like clothing, carpeting, or other plastic items. The process involves sorting, cleaning, shredding, melting, and then reforming the plastic into pellets or flakes, which can then be used to make new products. SUNSHINE CLUB Sunshine Helpers Needed! Chronic illnesses, hospitalization, and/or death can hit people hard. If you have a friend or neighbor here in Solera who needs a spark of sunshine, let members of the Sunshine Club know. For your convenience, the yellow Sunshine Box is located on the table in the Mail Room where you can drop off the information for a resident or residents who are sick or have experienced a death in the family. Sometimes just a card or telephone call will brighten someone's day immensely. Here's a more detailed look at the process: 1. Collection and Sorting: Recycled plastic bottles are collected from recycling bins and sorted by type, color, and material. 2. Cleaning: The bottles are cleaned to remove any food, liquid, or chemical residue. 3. Shredding: The cleaned bottles are then shredded into smaller pieces or flakes. 4. Melting: The shredded plastic is melted down and formed into pellets or flakes. 5. Reforming: These pellets or flakes are then used as raw material to make new plastic products, including new bottles, clothing, carpets, and other items. 6. Downcycling: Sometimes, recycled plastic bottles are "downcycled," meaning they are used to make products of lower value than the original, such as carpet backing. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who participates in recycling whether it is on your own or for the Sunshine Club! If you have any questions about our club or activities, feel free to ask one of our members or contact Diane Coffman at (949) 295-1097. We meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 1 pm in the Arts & Crafts Room and would love for you to join us!
