| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2025 | 35 Exploring the Dierent Types of Port Wine Port wine, one of Portugal's most iconic exports, is a fortied wine born in the steep terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. Known for its richness, depth, and balance of sweetness and structure, Port comes in a variety of styles — each oering a distinct expression of this historic wine. e most famous and revered style is Vintage Port. Made from grapes harvested in a single exceptional year, Vintage Port is bottled aer just two years of aging in cask and is meant to mature in the bottle for decades. With intense fruit avors, powerful tannins, and remarkable aging potential, Vintage Ports from producers like Taylor's, Graham's, and Fonseca are highly collectible and treasured worldwide. Ruby Port is the most widely available and approachable style. It is aged for a short period (two to three years) in large oak vats, which preserve its vibrant red color and fresh, fruit-forward avors of red berries and cherries. Ruby Port is ideal for casual sipping or pairing with chocolate desserts. Tawny Port, on the other hand, is aged in smaller oak barrels, which expose the wine to gradual oxidation and evaporation. is aging process gives Tawny Port its signature amber-brown color and avors of caramel, nuts, and dried fruits. Tawny Ports are available with indications of age — 10, 20, 30, or even 40 years — reecting the average age of the blend. Top examples from Graham's or Quinta do Noval oer extraordinary complexity and elegance. A rarer but fascinating style is White Port, craed from white grape varieties such as Malvasia Fina and Viosinho. White Port ranges from dry to sweet and oen exhibits avors of apricot, citrus, and almonds. Chilled White Port, especially in a Port and tonic cocktail, is a refreshing aperitif. Lastly, Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port bridges the gap between Ruby and Vintage styles. Made from a single vintage but aged four to six years in cask, LBV oers concentrated fruit and rened tannins, ready to drink upon release. With such a range of styles, Port wine oers something for every palate — whether you crave rich, luscious sweetness or nuanced aged elegance Residents of Ocean Hills can join the Wine Tasting Club for an annual fee of $15 per person.
