34 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2025 | Woodchucks Our Ocean Hills summers bring long days of sunshine, heat, and salty coastal air — beautiful, but it can be brutal on wooden furniture. Whether it's your cherished oak dining table indoors or teak chairs out on the patio, proper care guarantees your pieces will stay strong and beautiful through the hottest months. Here's some hints and tips to protect your wooden treasures. Indoor Furniture Care: Even inside, summer sun streaming through windows can fade finishes and dry out wood. A wood polish with conditioner which blends beeswax, carnauba wax, and orange oil will help to nourish and protect wood surfaces. I've had success with Howard's Sunshield & UV Protectant which I apply with a soft cloth, let it sit for 20 minutes, then buff gently. Also, it's a good idea to rotate furniture periodically to ensure even sun exposure and use UV-blocking window films or curtains during peak daylight. Outdoor Furniture Protection: Outdoor wood faces relentless UV rays, dry winds, and sometimes coastal moisture. I try to begin each summer by cleaning with a mild solution such as Murphy Oil Soap and a soft-bristle brush. Let the furniture dry completely, then, apply a waterproofing stain such as Thompson's WaterSeal for a semi-transparent layer that also provides UV defense while showcasing the natural grain. Treating your wood every summer will provide consistent protection. For teak, eucalyptus, or acacia, a Teak Oil such as StarBrite applied after cleaning penetrates deep into dense wood and protects against weathering and graying. Storage & Shade: Whenever possible, position outdoor pieces in shaded areas or use UV-resistant furniture covers. And be sure to allow for airf low under your furniture covers to prevent mold buildup. With a little summer prep, your wood furniture will stand up to SoCal's sun-soaked season and look even better come fall. Happy woodworking — and as your mother always said, "use a coaster!"
