| LIFE IN SOLERA | AUGUST 2025 | 39 is summer has been hot, hotter, and scorching. High heat and humidity negatively impact tennis performance and player well-being. Excessive heat can lead to increased heart rate, core temperature, and dehydration, all of which can impair physical and mental performance on the court. Furthermore, heat can aect the ball, making it bounce higher, and inuence racket materials, potentially soening them and altering their stiness. Physiological Eects: Increased Heart Rate and Core Temperature: e body's natural cooling mechanisms (sweating) can be overwhelmed in hot, humid conditions, leading to a rise in core temperature and an increased heart rate. Dehydration and Fatigue: Sweating can lead to signicant uid and electrolyte loss, potentially causing dehydration and fatigue, which can compromise performance and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Reduced Muscle Strength and Reaction Time: Studies suggest that elevated temperatures can negatively aect muscle strength and reaction time, further hindering a player's ability to respond eectively on the court. Impact on the Game: Ball Behavior: Heat can aect the ball's bounce, making it bounce higher due to increased internal pressure. Additionally, humidity can make the ball feel heavier and slower, altering its ight and responsiveness. Racket Performance: High temperatures can soen racket materials, potentially decreasing power output but also potentially increasing ball bounce. Match Dynamics: e increased time between points and rallies, as well as overall rally duration, have been correlated with elevated core temperatures during matches, potentially inuencing match dynamics. Strategies for Playing in the Heat: Hydration: Staying properly hydrated before, during, and aer the match is crucial to prevent dehydration and its associated problems. Cooling Strategies: Utilizing cooling towels, ice vests, and other cooling aids can help regulate body temperature. Adjusting Play Style: Players may need to adjust their game plan to account for the eects of heat on the ball and their own physical limitations. Monitoring and Awareness: Paying close attention to one's body, recognizing signs of heat stress, and adjusting play accordingly is essential. ~ Shirley Ferguson The table tennis group would like to thank Solera for the new table. Here are a few pictures of the table and members. We play Monday from 6 to 8 pm and Thursday from 10 am to 12 pm. The group promotes chair exercises, balance exercises, and just fun in playing table tennis. Come and play, all levels welcome.
