38 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2025 | It is hard to believe that almost two years have gone by since the launch of the Table Tennis club in November 2023. It is even harder to believe that a year has zipped by, and it is getting time to elect the Table Tennis Club Board members for 2026. A Candidate Forum and Membership Meeting will be held on Wed., Sept. 17 from 1 to 2 pm in Abravanel Hall. Look out for a call for candidates to issue soon with instructions, inviting members to apply for positions of their interest. At the Candidates Forum on Sept. 17, candidates will have an opportunity to introduce themselves and present their background and relevant experience for the office they are seeking. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions and present ideas to enhance the future of our very young club. Light Refreshments will be served, and regular table tennis play will commence after the meeting. The Table Tennis club meets on Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat. and Sun. every week. On weekdays the default location for play is Mykonos Room. Our usual schedule is Mondays from 10:45 am to 12:45 pm, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 8 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays in Abravanel Hall all day from 8 am to 8 pm. Please check the updated weekly time schedules that are emailed to members every week and/or as posted on the digital display board in the Clubhouse for the latest times because, occasionally, there are schedule changes based on room availability. Written by Babu Patrose Table Tennis Pool Versus Pickleball Pickleball is fast. It's fun. It's everywhere. But before you run out and buy a paddle, may I suggest another activity that's just as engaging, easier on the knees, and played in glorious air conditioning? Let's talk pool — the quiet champ of games that sharpens the mind, fosters connections, and does not require Ben-Gay. e Physical Perks (Yes, Pool Has em!) While it may not get your heart pumping like a brisk pickleball rally, pool offers subtle, significant benefits: • Gentle movement: Bending, stretching, walking, leaning that keeps the body in motion without overdoing it. • Improved coordination: Aiming, striking, adjusting… a game of angles, finesse, and balance. • Low impact: No running backwards. No chasing balls. No twisted ankles. Let's just say if your hips and knees could vote, they'd vote billiards. A Great Exercise for e Brain Unlike pickleball, where split-second reflexes rule the court, pool gives us moments to think: • Every shot is a puzzle needing focus and planning. • Angles, banks, combos — it's geometry and trigonometry in motion. That's why so many engineers enjoy the game. • Memory and strategy: What worked last game? What didn't? Maybe I should have played a safety? Every match teaches us something. Social Without the Sweat One of the best parts of both games is the camaraderie. But pool has its own rhythm: • You can talk between shots. • Spectators are welcome and appreciated. • It's not age-gated. Whether you're 55 or 95, you're in the game. Also… played in an air-conditioned room. Don't need to expand on this one. So, if you're looking for a game that combines mental sharpness, social connection, gentle movement, and year- round comfort, pool has a lot going for it. We'd love to see more of you in the Billiards Room whether you're ready to shoot, learn, or just watch. Stop by. Say hi. You might find yourself hooked. See you on the felt, Harris Golden, President, OHCC Billiards Club Billiards June's 9-ball champions; 1st place Phylis Lemberg, 2nd place David Steele, 3rd place Rick Goodin
