| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2025 | 5 During the OHCC Earthquake Drill taking place on Wed., Oct. 22, the "Emergency Response Team" (ERT) will be primarily focused on providing First Aid that may be necessary during a major earthquake. It is "assumed" that OHCC will not have access to Fire and Law enforcement or other Federal/State/County resources for up to 72-hours after the earthquake. This means No EMT's, No Firetrucks, No Ambulances, No Police. We will be on our own! It is especially important that everyone understands what SERT ERT team members can provide. e Dierence Between First Aid and Medical Care - Understanding the Distinction First Aid and Medical care are both vital elements in responding to health emergencies, but they are distinctly dierent. First Aid: First Aid is the immediate, temporary assistance given to an injured or ill person before professional medical help arrives. It is usually performed by laypersons or bystanders with basic training, and its main objectives are to preserve life, prevent the injuries from worsening, and promote recovery. First Aid includes actions such as stopping bleeding, performing CPR, cleaning wounds, immobilizing fractures, or treating minor burns. The focus is on stabilizing the individual and providing comfort until more advanced treatment can be accessed. Medical Care: Medical care, by contrast, is provided by healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, or paramedics, often in a clinical or hospital setting. It involves a thorough diagnosis, advanced treatment, and ongoing management of illnesses or injuries. Medical care may include surgical procedures, prescribing medication, advanced diagnostics (like X-rays or blood tests), and long-term rehabilitation plans. It addresses both the immediate needs and the underlying causes of a health issue, offering comprehensive and specialized intervention. In summary, First Aid is the initial, on-the-spot intervention aimed at stabilization, while medical care is the in-depth, professional treatment necessary for recovery and long-term health. Both are essential, but they differ in scope, expertise, and the resources involved. OHCC Community Support: SERT has first aid materials on hand and during an actual emergency will have a First Aid Station set up, probably on the Lanai or in the overflow parking lot. SERT may have medical professionals on its First Aid team, but it can only provide basic first aid - not medical services - at the First Aid station.
