| LIFE IN SOLERA | DECEMBER 2025 | 3 FROM THE BOARD B Ro Monro, Directo a Larg At September's Board of Directors meeting, the Board approved a proposal to buy three automated external defibrillators (AED's) for the community not to exceed $8,000. Due to the hard work of our General Manager Ellen Racobs and staff, the final bid came in under $5,900. One new AED is in service in the pool area. Another AED will be placed in the Sports Courts area once a platform is fabricated. The third AED will be used as a back-up AED and will be stored in the Solera Administrative Office. The new AEDs will complement the two AED's located by the kitchen and gym. Each AED has one adult pad cartridge pre-installed. A child pad cartridge is included in each AED case. A first-responder kit is in each AED cabinet and contains the following: • One pair of nitrile gloves • One pocket CPR mask • One pair of scissors • One shaving razor • Two towelettes An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable medical device that analyzes a person's heart rhythm and delivers an electric shock if necessary to restore a normal heartbeat. It is designed to be used by non-medical personnel and uses voice prompts to guide the user through the steps of a sudden cardiac arrest emergency. AEDs are crucial for increasing the survival rate for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Liability There is no liability when using an AED unit. California Health and Safety Code 1799.102 (The Good Samaritan Law) provides civil liability protection for individuals who provide emergency medical or non-medical care in good faith and without compensation at the scene of an emergency. This protection extends to ordinary negligence, but not to gross negligence or willful misconduct. Training An AED device is very easy to use. There are voice prompts from the AED unit to guide the user. In addition, there is a separate step-by- step AED instruction guide next to every AED deployed on Solera property. The Solera HOA has offered CPR/AED certification classes in the past. The most recent class was in May, 2025. Several members of the community and staff from the Solera administrative office attended the class. First-Aid CPR/AED classes are available to Solera residents from various venders and organizations such as the Red Cross. An AED is very simple to use. If you can use a toaster, you can use an AED. Of the people who suffer a cardiac arrest event and receive a shock from an AED in the first minute, 9 out of 10 live!
