62 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2026
On Feb. 2, Punxsutawney Phil stuck his head out of
his burrow and saw his shadow, thus prognosticating
that there would be six more weeks of winter weather.
If winter weather in Beaumont means more of the trash-can-tossing
Santa Ana winds, playing on our courts will be an adventure. So,
maybe the early weeks of March will be good for watching tennis
at the BNP Paribas Open at the magnificent Indian Wells Tennis
Garden (can I be an inf luencer writing for the Breeze?). While
many of the world's top men and women pros will be competing
for millions of dollars of prize money, we cheapos can still watch
them play and practice during the early days of the tournament for
as little as $10. You may get to see history-making Carlos Alcaraz,
the youngest male to win at least one of each of the Grand Slam
tournaments, in his sleeveless shirt as he warms up on a practice
court.
Though not sponsored by the Tennis Club, we do have three USTA
teams captained by club leaders who will continue their play during
March: Mixed Doubles, captain Lou Stokes; and Chuck Beckman
captains two teams with an assist from Tito Calderon, 55+ Men's
and 65+ Men's teams. Apparently, there are not enough 75+ players
still alive, so Howard Levine and I will still have to play with the
(relative) youngsters. These teams play away-matches at some of
the beautiful country clubs in the Coachella Valley (for money, I
will name names) and home matches at The Courts. Come out and
watch a home match and maybe you can snatch a snack that Tito
made.
Mike Olson continues to manage the recycling
project, generating significant funding that supports
the activities of the club. Look for the email reminders
about collection dates, typically every other month.
Please watch your Tennis Club emails to see the start times for the
Saturday FUNdamental drills and gentle coaching. Regular last-
Saturday-of-the-month Play Days will have sign-ins at 8:30 am and
play beginning at 9 am, though the start time is subject to change
in March. The Tennis Club Committee meets monthly on the last
Monday at 4 pm at The Summit. Members are welcome to attend.
