16 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2026 | Many residents of Sun Lakes Country Club are concerned about security and want to install motion-sensor lights. An often-overlooked item is installing motion-sensor light bulbs in your existing fixtures. Motion sensor lightbulbs are compatible with most existing coach lights and most existing fixtures. They even work in overhead patio lights. These light bulbs are available with less than 550 lumens (a 40-watt incandescent bulb or an 8- to 12-watt LED bulb). More importantly, installing motion-sensor lightbulbs does not require approval from the Master Architectural Board. Motion sensor lightbulbs are the most economical way to improve your home's security. If you would rather install new coach lights or new motion sensor lights, you need to be aware of the following: 1. Any change or addition to exterior light fixtures requires Master Architectural Committee (MAC) approval. 2. All motion sensor lights must be directed within a resident's property and should not shine on a neighbor's property. No exterior light shall be placed or maintained on an owner's property that causes an unreasonable glare or illumination upon any other private or common area. 3. The lights must be compatible with the house's style and design, and should be simple in design and color. No exposed wires or cables are allowed. 4. Bulb wattage cannot exceed 550 lumens (40-watt incandescent bulbs or 8-12 LED). The 550 lumens includes incandescent fixtures with multiple lights. The combined lights cannot exceed 550 lumens. 5. String, rope, or icicle-type lighting may only be placed in the front of your home for holiday decoration use. White string or rope lighting may be used in the rear yard patio year round; provided its placement or illumination does not create a nuisance to surrounding residences. String/rope lighting must be mounted on the interior of the patio cover so that the string/rope is not visible from any common area. Remember, the illumination cannot create a nuisance in the surrounding areas.(Article 7, Section 7.12.) Some of you may be considering solar lighting. If so, remember: 1. All solar energy systems, including lights, must be approved by the MAC. 2. All exterior wiring and conduit must be taut against the stucco and painted to match the house stucco. 3. Solar panels should be placed on the side of the house so as not to be visible from the front of the house. 4. Solar lights cannot exceed a combined total of 550 lumens. Be very cautious when installing solar f loodlights. They can exceed 1200 to 1800 lumens and will cause unreasonable glare or illumination on a neighbor's property. ~ Roy Nierman, Chairman Master Architure Committee Master Architectural Puzzles: A Small Joy With Big Appeal Jigsaw puzzles are among the most popular items in our clubhouse libraries, and it's easy to understand why. They offer a perfect blend of relaxation and gentle brain challenge, fitting easily into daily life. A puzzle can be enjoyed alone or shared with friends, picked up for a few minutes or worked on over several days. There's no schedule, no pressure, and no right or wrong pace — just the quiet satisfaction of watching an image slowly come together. In a retirement community, puzzles can also create natural opportunities for conversation, cooperation and connection. Many residents of Sun Lakes enjoy puzzles because they feel mentally refreshing without being demanding. Sorting colors, recognizing patterns, and figuring out where pieces belong encourages focus and patience in a way that feels playful rather than stressful. Just as important, completing a puzzle brings a real sense of accomplishment — especially that final, satisfying piece. To help keep our puzzle collection complete and enjoyable for everyone, a few simple habits go a long way. Working over a tray or mat helps to prevent pieces from slipping away. Also, either putting a large rubber band around the box or placing all pieces in a zip- lock bag before returning a puzzle keeps everything together. If you notice a missing piece or a damaged box, attach a note to the box before you return it so that a library volunteer can decide whether to repair or retire the puzzle. With a little care, our puzzles will continue to bring relaxation, challenge and shared enjoyment to our residents for years to come. ~ Laurel Stanley, lvstanley@gmail.com Library Advisory Sun Lakes Committee Reports If you have experience in finance, investments or management of operations please join us. The committee is chaired by Cathy Phillips and Co-Chaired by Kathy O'Hara. ~ Cathy Phillips, cclpcathy@gmail.com, (909) 297- 9520 Financial Advisory
