18 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2026 | The holiday season is finally over, and I hope it was a good one for everyone in OHCC. I had a great holiday, but when I looked in my wallet today, I saw it was empty! How convenient that Penny and I had scheduled another shuttle trip to San Marcos where there is a Mission Federal along with good places for lunch. No need for me to make my own way to the bank. On this trip we had a full shuttle, which had seven riders. Regulars Fran, Jan, Bernadette and a couple who are no longer able to drive were on the ride with us. They were all doing their weekly shopping at stores like Aldi and Walmart and nearly filled the back of the shuttle with their bags. Our driver Fred was new to me, but just as helpful as the previous drivers. He helped with the packages and, more importantly, helped us get in and out of the van. Fred comes to us from Rancho Bernardo and drives the shuttle when there are seven passengers scheduled. The other van only holds six. He and Jan have become friends as she helped him learn the roads in this part of the county. He has caught on quickly and, I must admit, does a better job of navigating than I could do with my mildly impaired sense of direction. It was great to be able to chat away and not have to pay attention to the road. After my visit to the bank and a nice lunch we headed back, picked up each of our riders at the various places they asked to go. Then it was back to OHCC where we each got dropped off at our individual homes. I have heard that some of our residents are a little unsure about taking the shuttle on their own. If this is you, please email me (ellsiew@yahoo.com) so I can contact you and make a plan to go with you on your first trip. There are copies of the shuttle schedules in the Clubhouse so you can decide which trip would be best for you. Also, I can help you with sign up and with the filling out of the one-time only waiver. Remember, using a cane is not an impediment. I hope to see you on our next shuttle ride. Submitted by Lynne Williams Transportation March Madness & Moments at Matter! March Madness is here — one of my favorite times of the year! The excitement of the college basketball tournament always takes me back to where my love for the game began. I picked up a basketball in elementary school, and my very first hoop was mounted to a beautiful Eastern Hemlock tree in our yard. Believe it or not, what is left of that hoop is still there today! Basketball became an even bigger part of my life after I grew seven inches between 7th and 8th grade — talk about a growth spurt! I was proud to play for my high school team (GO TIGERS!) and worked incredibly hard as a freshman to earn a spot on varsity so I could play alongside my big brother, Mark, who was a senior. I'll never forget hearing our names announced together in the starting lineup — one of those memories that stays with you forever. That passion eventually led me to a full athletic scholarship at Mansfield University, right in my hometown of Mansfield, PA. This month, I encourage you to pause and ref lect on the memories that have shaped your own journey, the proud moments, the joyful experiences, and the people who made them special. I'm sharing this photo of my brother Mark, who passed in his late 20s. He was a gentle giant at 6'8" with a huge heart, someone who respected and valued every person he met, no matter their background or point of view. His spirit reminds me how important community and kindness truly are. Speaking of community, your Recreation Department is keeping March full of energy with more than 20 activities, classes, programs, and events! From Aqua Fitness and yoga to bowling, game nights, and healthy-living workshops, there's something for everyone. Be sure to stop by the Clubhouse to see all the ways you can connect, stay active, and have fun. Our mission is simple: to inspire opportunities to recreate, socialize, and thrive right here at OHCC. Mark your calendars for some exciting events ahead! The Spring Eggstravaganza hops into town on Sat., April 4 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Clubhouse & Lanai. This FREE celebration will feature egg hunts, bounce houses, and plenty of family fun for residents and guests. And get ready for a tasty new tradition — Taco Tuesday is coming to the Lanai on the first Tuesday of every month! As we enjoy the month of March — the bridge between winter and spring — let's celebrate new beginnings, Women's History Month, and a little St. Patrick's Day fun. And of course, let the madness begin! See you around the Clubhouse! Recreation News By CJ Palmer
