26 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2026 | Welcome to Newbies — Your OHCC Community Connection At Ocean Hills Country Club, settling into a new home is about more than unpacking boxes — it's about discovering a vibrant community full of activities, friendships, and opportunities to connect. That's where Newbies, the OHCC welcoming committee, comes in. Our mission is simple: to ensure every resident feels comfortable, supported, and truly at home from the very beginning. Each quarter, Newbies hosts a community potluck that brings together both new and longtime residents. These friendly, relaxed gatherings offer a chance to meet neighbors, share stories, and start building the friendships that make OHCC such a special place to live. With 40 official clubs and countless special-interest groups, OHCC is often described as a year-round summer camp for adults. Whether you enjoy golf, racquet sports, swimming, bocce ball, crafts, music, billiards, mahjongg, or card games, you're sure to find activities — and people — who share your interests. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Barbara DuDeck, Your Sunny San Diego Connection, for her dedicated sponsorship of Newbies from June 2024 through December 2025. Barbara and her husband, Ric DuDeck, not only contributed financially but also attended every Newbies gathering to personally welcome newcomers. Barbara has distinguished herself through a remarkable 42-year real estate career and has earned numerous certifications and awards, including the RE/MAX Lifetime Achievement Award. She has two daughters (one deceased), a stepdaughter, two grandchildren, and four great grandkids! She loves dancing, traveling, cooking, and reading — and you're likely to spot her warm, welcoming smile at many OHCC events. Thank you again, Barbara! We are also delighted to welcome Sue Silva, Your OHCC Resident Realtor, as our 2026 Newbies sponsor. Sue is a vibrant presence in the community and a generous supporter of many OHCC clubs and groups. We are grateful for her partnership in 2026 and look forward to working together to welcome our newest residents. Thank you, Sue! Please join us for the next Newbies Potluck on Sat., March 7 from 1 to 3 pm in Abravanel Hall. Kindly RSVP by February 25th at ohccnewbies@gmail.com. Remember, life is richer when shared with friends — and we can't wait to meet you. Warmly, Lynn Bible & Rosemary Bray, Newbies Co-Leaders Newbies Tree Ferns Ferns are true living fossils. Found in records dating back more than 200 million years, these hardy, adaptable plants were among the earliest to evolve — and they've been thriving ever since. From forest f loors to backyard gardens, ferns have quietly spread across the globe, surviving where many other plants could not. Our March speaker, Jay Amshey, will explore the fascinating world of ferns — from how all ferns reproduce to where tree ferns fit within the larger fern family. He'll also share tips on how to tell different types apart and highlight varieties that grow right here in the San Diego area. A retired biochemist and enthusiastic plant grower, Jay has a special passion for propagating ferns and Hoyas. He is an active member of the San Diego Fern Society, an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning more about ferns — or finding unusual specimens to grow at home. Event Details: Wed., March 11, at Abravanel Hall. Social time begins at 9:30 am, with the meeting starting at 10 am. While Garden Club membership is not required to attend monthly meetings, we invite you to join for just $10 per year — sign up at any meeting. Don't forget to visit the Share Table for gardening treasures, and we look forward to seeing you there! *We also want to alert residents to a dangerous citrus disease found in OHCC For pictures and more information, visit How to Spot Citrus Greening Disease https:// www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/fruits/citrus/citrus-greening-disease.htm or California Dept. of Food and Agriculture - Citrus Pest and Disease Division https:// www.cdfa.ca.gov/Citrus/ Call the California hotline at (800) 491-1899 if you suspect your citrus has the disease.
