16 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2026 | You are not alone when you consider the importance of protecting your home. The Master Architectural Committee is experiencing a significant increase in applications for the use of video surveillance cameras. As consistently reported the job of the MAC is to follow the guidelines provided in the General Statement of Rules and Regulations here at Sun Lakes. Video surveillance is addressed in the Architectural Standards section "7.33 Security Cameras: The use of video surveillance cameras is permitted to deter acts of vandalism and potential criminal activity, and increase the likelihood that perpetrators of these acts will be identified. Video recording surveillance camera installations must be in compliance with privacy laws governing the collection of personal information. Cameras and/or recording equipment may not impede upon the privacy of neighbors by having camera angles of shared driveway areas and/or an adjacent structure's windows, back or side yards. Cameras may not be directed on community common area…" For exterior installations, architectural plans must identify number and location of cameras. Location of areas each camera will monitor, including the range of scope, is required. Bingo Advisory Have you ever thought about what goes into maintaining a golf course? Simply put, it takes a lot of work. At Sun Lakes, a staff of 23 is tasked with providing maintenance of our two 18-hole golf courses — included are Superintendent Mark Burchfield, Asst. Superintendent Guillermo Olivares, equipment mechanics, irrigators, turf, and setup crew. The demands on our crew far surpass those of most golf courses. Morning Prep: Greens need to be cut in the morning. This is especially important for removal of dew to maintain healthy greens and decrease potential disease. Early morning course work also includes setting pin locations on the green, filling divot mix and water buckets, emptying trash cans, and raking sand traps. Days with shotgun starts are especially challenging. Turf Maintenance: The mowing priorities for a golf course are greens, tee boxes, fairways, and then rough. In addition to the obvious cutting of grass, specialized work is required for irrigation, pest control, weed abatement, and maintenance of equipment. Detail work, such as trimming perimeter walls, edging cart paths, and weed abatement, occurs when time allows, since there is no dedicated staff to provide this work. Yearly reoccurring items include greens aeration and application of pre-emergent herbicides, fertilizer, and pesticides. Tree Trimming: Low hanging, broken or downed limbs, brush removal, and debris clean-up are handled by golf maintenance. Trimming of mature trees is contracted with a licensed and certified golf course arborist to stay in compliance with OSHA regulations. This specialized, off-the-ground trimming provides removal of excess bulk to improve the appearance, fix obstructed views, and reduce potential safety hazards. The next time you play a round think about the work that went into producing the playing conditions you enjoy and thank the crew for their effort. ~ Mike Callahan, callahm56@yahoo.com Golf Advisory
