| OHCC LIVING | APRIL 2026 | 39 What a fun time members who attended the I Love Mah Jongg Party had on Feb. 13. 100 members attended the event and 92 played Mah Jongg in the Hall that afternoon. Thank you to Gail Latino and Nancy Resnick who did a wonderful job as social co-chairs and their committee. The special treats were delicious and the decor so cute. Linda Corry and Jacqueline Ettinger baked cookies and brownie bites for the gathering. The champagne punch was delicious, and Terry's mini cupcakes looked incredible and tasted wonderful as well. Our first pop-up event will take place on Fri., March 27. We are hoping it is going to be an "OPEN the new card for the first time" event. Participants will have 10 minutes to review the card before the games actually begin. Prizes will be awarded in several categories. In the event that the 2026 cards don't arrive in the mail by the 27th we will Plan B it and each table will be playing with mystery year cards. Groups will open the envelope and have a review period before the games begin. Prizes will be awarded as well. The social committee is busy at work on the National Mah Jongg Day Party Event on Thurs., April 30. We hope many members of the club and guests will join in the fun that day. Details on the poster and on our website. Answer to last month's question: When you roll the dice as East and break your wall, the number on the dice that you roll corresponds to the number of stacks of tiles you pull back to your rack. These tiles should be placed on the right-hand side of your rack- think - the walls are contiguous. Question of the Month: Can a joker be used in a pair, run, one of the tiles in NEWS or one of the tiles in a year block, i.e. 2025?? PLEASE email the club if you have a question, you would like an answer to, if you have any general questions about the club or if you have any suggestions! Mahj On! Written by Jacqueline Ettinger Mahjongg Club More an Just a Game Walk into the billiards room and you'll see balls rolling, cues striking, and maybe hear the occasional cheer or groan. At first glance, pool might seem like a simple game: hit the ball, make the shot, and hope for the best. But anyone who has spent time at the table knows there's much more going on. Billiards is a game of strategy, patience, and imagination. In fact, many experienced players think of games like 8-ball as a form of chess played on green felt. Every shot asks a question: Do I go for the difficult shot, or do I play safe and leave my opponent without a shot? Sometimes the smartest move isn't the one that sinks a ball. It's the one that quietly changes the entire table — just like unexpectedly capturing your opponent's king — checkmate! What makes billiards especially enjoyable in our community is that it brings people together. Some players come to improve their skills, some come for friendly competition, and others simply enjoy the social atmosphere. The laughter, the friendly rivalries, and the shared learning are all part of the experience. One of the great things about pool is that anyone can play, and everyone can improve. Even players who have been playing for decades are still learning something new — how to control the cue ball a little better, how to think a shot ahead, or how to stay calm under pressure. In the end, billiards is about more than making balls. It's about focus, camaraderie, and the quiet satisfaction of solving a puzzle one shot at a time. Written by Harris Golden Billiards
