Travel & Accessibility Reaching Fiji typically involves a long (10-11 hours) international flight from Los Angeles. This can be tiring for some seniors. A passport is required, but no visa is necessary for short stays of up to four months. Leah and I typically include a stopover in Fiji on our way to or from other locations, such as Australia or New Zealand. It breaks up the longer trip and Fiji Airways often offers this stopover for no extra charge. Travel to Kauai is much simpler for Americans. Direct flights (six hours) are available from Los Angeles, and no passport is required for U.S. citizens. Roads are well-maintained, and rental cars or guided tours make getting around easy. One additional consideration is the foreign currency exchange advantage. The U.S. dollar buys approximately $2.25 Fijian dollars, meaning Fiji is generally less expensive than Hawaii. Final thoughts — which island should you choose? Both Viti Levu, Fiji and Kauai, Hawaii offer an unforgettable experience in a beautiful tropical setting. The best choice ultimately depends on how much travel effort you're comfortable with and whether you prefer a total escape or a balance of comfort and activity. For many senior travelers, Kauai provides peace of mind and ease, while Fiji delivers a once-in-a-lifetime, deeply relaxing retreat. Either way, you'll be surrounded by paradise. But instead of choosing, why not visit both? 1 4 7 2 3 6 5 9 8 11 10
