QUILTERS
One of the most famous "quilters" in American History was Betsy
Ross. Did she really make the first American Flag? There is quite
a bit of controversy about this. but what we do know is that she did
make many f lags for the Pennsylvania Navy during the American
Revolution, and continued to make them for over 50 years. She had
an upholstery shop in Philadelphia which made bedding, curtains,
and upholstery — all by hand.
In May of 1777 she was paid 14 pounds, 12 shillings and 2 pence
for her efforts. The f lag was officially adopted on June 14, 1777.
According to her grandson who reported in 1870 to the Historical
Society of Pennsylvania, George Washington and two others visited
her shop and asked her to sew a design he presented to her. She
changed the original six pointed stars to five points because they
were easier to sew!
We quilters are always looking for more efficient ways to piece
our quilts, so this makes sense! Well done, Betsy!
New members have joined our Knit &
Crochet Club. Meet Linda Hardinger and
Linda Uithoven (at left). Linda H has
lived in Solera for awhile while Linda U
is a newbie. We are enjoying getting to
know these ladies and both are welcome
additions to our group and we look
forward to seeing what projects they will
be taking on. The picture shows what
they are working on now.
