34 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2026 | e Hal Bolton Memorial Regatta Returns to San Diego Bay The Ocean Hills Sailing Club is excited to announce the 2026 Hal Bolton Memorial Regatta, taking place on Thurs., Sept. 17, on beautiful San Diego Bay. Seven boats will compete in this year's regatta, each carrying a crew of five, including the captain. Friendly competition, teamwork, and good seamanship make this one of the highlights of our sailing season. The Ocean Hills Regatta has been a club tradition for many years. Although suspended during the COVID pandemic, it was revived through the efforts of Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello and renamed the Hal Bolton Memorial Regatta in honor of longtime racing captain and treasured club member, Hal Bolton. Following the race, the winning captain will receive the perpetual Regatta trophy during a celebratory dinner in Palm Court, where racers, their guests, and fellow Ocean Hills Sailing Club members will gather to recognize another outstanding day on the water. Whether racing or cheering from shore, we hope you'll join us in celebrating one of our club's favorite traditions. Captain of the Month: Meet Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello Fleet Captain Charlie Cappello has spent decades pursuing his passion for sailing. After earning his U.S. Coast Guard Captain's License in the late 1980s, he owned a sailing business, taught sailing, and chartered sailboats. His experience includes both ocean and bay racing in Miami and New Jersey aboard boats from 14 to 60 feet. In 2002, Charlie turned his attention to catamarans, participating in memorable events including races around the Statue of Liberty and sailing to Coney Island. He was also active with the renowned Sandy Hook Catamaran Club. Today, Charlie oversees every aspect of the Ocean Hills Sailing Club f leet from coordinating sailing schedules and supporting captains and first mates to helping ensure every outing is safe and enjoyable. Under his exceptional leadership, the club now includes 11 captains, 16 first mates, five second mates, and three Captains- in-Training, almost 300 club members and expect to complete 100+ outings this season. After years of owning and maintaining boats, Charlie says his favorite part of sailing today is simple: "I get to walk off the boat and not worry about cleaning it." We thank Charlie for his dedication and the countless hours he invests behind the scenes to keep our club thriving. Fair winds, Charlie! Written by Pat Melzer Sailing Club
