Racquet Club Summer for Racquet Club members is in full swing, and our signature warm weather celebration — Summer Chill — is just around the corner. This much-anticipated annual tradition has once again sold out, drawing members to the Lanai and Palm Court for an evening of live music, dancing, and easygoing fun. With classic rock favorites performed by San Diego's Zeelund, the night offers a welcome pause between major court events, giving everyone a chance to relax, reconnect, and enjoy the camaraderie that defines our community. June brought its own excitement with Pickleball Wars, a lighthearted competition that proved far more playful than its name suggests. There were 48 enthusiastic players who signed up for the June dinking challenge — emphasis on dinking, not drinking — to test their finesse inside the seven foot "kitchen" zone. Participants rotated partners over five games, accumulating points before the top twelve advanced to a lively final. In a spirited finish, the "pinks" (Mingwhei Chen, Bruce Lambert, John Pashkowsky, David Steele, Diane Bednarski, and Ralph Osborn) edged out the "greens" (David Singer, Jerry Dillard, Guy James, Tim Sowell, Patricia Dellow, and Julie Pashkowsky), earning cheers from an appreciative crowd. Tennis activity has surged as well, thanks to the dedication of resident and USPTA certified Elite Pro Greg Smith, who offers a variety of free skill and strategy clinics during his months here. These sessions — advertised through email, bulletin boards, and the club website — provide a welcoming entry point for newcomers and a valuable refresher for returning players. Monthly Club Night continues to be a highlight, pairing afternoon doubles with post match pizza at Grand Slam. The tennis committee is encouraged by growing participation and invites all tennis curious residents to join in. Email the Help Desk to get on the list. Looking ahead, September brings our popular Baggin' & Braggin' team cornhole competition, a month long series played on consecutive Wednesdays from 4 to 6 pm. Whether you are a seasoned participant or someone who's only tossed a few bags at family gatherings, keep an eye out for upcoming emails with full details. For those eager to give it a try sooner, cornhole boards will be available during the August Pickleball Play & Stay on Sat., Aug. 1, from 10:30 am to 1 pm.
