Our Summer Lunch Social was enjoyed by about 60 club members. The common joke is that we hardly recognize each other without swim caps, goggles and snorkels! Thanks to all of the volunteers who assisted food chairperson Dorothy Kraus with setup, serving and clean up. It truly takes a village. Thank you! The Swim & Wellness club sponsors and facilitates three wellness presentations every year - January, March and September. Our next presentation will be on Fri., Sept. 11, at 1:30 pm on the Lanai. We will be welcoming Dr. Bryan Hawkins, D.O., who is board-certified in family medicine and neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM). NMM is a specialized branch of osteopathic medicine focused on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the nerves, muscle, bones and joints. It's a specialty designation that few physicians in the U.S. have achieved. His approach to health care is anchored by hands-on osteopathic manipulative therapy and innovative treatments to restore function and reduce pain without relying on drugs or surgery. Mark your calendar for this interesting presentation. Have you ever heard of the Blue Mind Effect? Blue Mind is the mildly meditative state people fall into when they are near, in, under or on water. It is often referred to as "water related peace." The color, sound and feel of water can lower pulse rate and increase feelings of calmness. This applies to any type of water - ocean, lake, stream, creek, river or pool! And remember, you don't have to be IN the water, you get the same benefit just being near it. If you're actually in the water, the benefits increase dramatically. Being in the water is known to reduce your high blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so they can carry more blood while presenting less resistance to the heart. A 2020 cross sectional study found that water aerobics is an effective way to protect against heart disease. Swimming, specifically, may also reduce mental stress, which is good for your overall cardiovascular well-being. Even simple activities such as water walking can help your internal organs, like your lungs, because the water pressure makes them work harder than they would out of the pool. Here at OHCC, we have a beautiful pool for all of these activities. We are an informal group that gathers on the Palm Court to socialize and listen to music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. In the past, every household brought a dish to share potluck style. If you are comfortable with this, please bring your salad, entree, casserole, hot dish, dessert, etc. along with a serving utensil for the buffet table. If you do not wish to share with the community, please bring your own meal. Everything else is "bring your own", i.e. beverages, dishes, utensils, cups, glasses, napkins. Outdoor games are welcome! For more information and to get on the contact list, email ohccboomers@ aol.com. Written by Karla Sando Boomers Fun with pool friends Mike Kraus is pondering, what could be in that prize bag?'
