24 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2026 | Water-Wise Plants at Bloom and Invite Pollinators Have you ever stopped to appreciate the busy little visitors f litting from f lower to f lower? Pollinators come in many forms — from bees, butterf lies, moths, f lies, and beetles to hummingbirds, bats, and even a few lizards and small mammals. As they travel between blossoms, they carry pollen that allows plants to produce fruits, vegetables, seeds, and f lowers. In fact, nearly one-third of the food we eat depends on animal pollination, making these remarkable creatures essential to both our gardens and our daily lives. Our August speaker, Debby Dunn, has spent decades inspiring people to create beautiful, water-wise landscapes that support these hardworking garden allies. An enthusiastic environmental advocate, Debby has taught countless workshops on sustainable landscaping. She says the presentation she'll be sharing with the OHCC Garden Club is consistently her audience's favorite. Through photographs and practical advice, Debby will introduce a wide variety of colorful, low-water plants that f lourish in San Diego's climate while attracting an array of pollinators. You'll discover which plants are favorites of bees, butterf lies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial visitors, making it easy to create a garden that's both beautiful and buzzing with life. She'll also provide helpful handouts detailing bloom times and f lower colors, making it simple to plan a landscape that offers year-round beauty and support for pollinators. Debby has helped more than 12,000 homeowners and business owners transform their landscapes into sustainable, wildlife- friendly spaces. A Master Gardener with a B.A. in Environmental Studies and a master's degree in public administration, she has designed award-winning landscapes that delight both people and nature. When she's not teaching workshops or speaking to gardening groups, Debby works for the San Diego County Water Authority, where she continues her commitment to water conservation and environmental stewardship. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just beginning your gardening journey, you'll leave this presentation with fresh ideas, practical tips, and a new appreciation for the incredible creatures that help our gardens f lourish. Join us for an informative, inspiring, and fascinating program that just might change the way you look at every f lower in your yard. Event Details: Wed., Aug. 12, in Abravanel Hall. Social time begins at 9:30 am with the meeting starting at 10 am.
