As the summer heats up, it is a good time to begin thinking of cooler times ahead, especially when gardening in Southern California. We let most of our vegetable beds rest while sustaining the squash and tomato plants that survive the heat. This is also a good time to begin saving seeds from harvested vegetables for later plantings. Saving seeds is a great way to save money and is a sustainable way of reproducing plants. Seeds from squash plants like pumpkin, spaghetti, and butternut squashes can be removed from the plant, washed and dried, and then preserved in containers. Seeds from tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, and eggplants need to be fermented first before saving. To find out more about these seed saving methods, come to our next Late Bloomers meeting on Aug. 10 at 1 pm in the Arts & Crafts Room. Bring your knowledge and questions to share in the discussion, and of course, bring seeds if you would like to share with others. We have decided that our Community Garden plans are metamorphosizing into creating a demonstration garden where all residents can come and learn about growing and maintaining home gardens that include climate appropriate f lowers, shrubs, succulents, herbs and vegetables. Presented in a hands-on format, feel free to ask questions, share comments or email us at: fscommunitygarden1@gmail.com and we can address those topics in an open forum setting. Our next meeting is Mon., Aug. 10 at 1 pm in the Arts & Crafts Room. The summer heat is still here, but the Drumheadz Club has the perfect way to cool off. Join us in the air-conditioned Ballroom and beat the heat by beating the drums! Whether you're an experienced drummer or have never picked up a drum before, everyone is welcome. Hand drumming is a fun way to stay active, reduce stress, exercise your brain, and enjoy time with friends and neighbors. Every drum circle is unique, and every participant adds something special to the rhythm. We will provide five extra drums and a variety of percussion shakers, and we may have up to 20 drums available depending on RSVPs. If you'd like to guarantee a drum reserved for you, please RSVP. Text or call Debbie Foster at (805) 406-6581 or Daune Willahan at (831) 233-0135. Feel free to contact us with any questions. We meet on the first and third Thursdays at 2 pm in the Ballroom. Beat the heat, feel the rhythm, and make some unforgettable memories with the Drumheadz Club. We hope to see you in the circle! DrumHeadz Drum Circle
