34 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2026 | The Ocean Hills Sailing Club continues to grow, with 293 members now enjoying adventures on San Diego Bay. There are 26 sails scheduled for Cycle 4 (September and October), and a few crew openings are still available. Visit the OHSC website if you'd like to come aboard and discover where the wind might take you! Our seven 2026 Hal Bolton Memorial Regatta team crews are busily sharpening their technical skills for the big day Thurs., Sept. 17. We'll share the winners and photos in the November issue of OHCC Living. Captain of the Month: Larry See For some, the sailing bug bites early — and never lets go. For Larry, that happened as a teenager racing offshore with a friend along the Santa Barbara coast. Surrounded by sailboats and inspired by members of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, he quickly developed a love for being on the water. After four years in the Navy, he purchased a 20-foot sloop, only to discover that boat ownership requires almost as much maintenance as sailing! As careers and family took priority, sailing was put on hold for more than 60 years. That changed when Larry and his wife retired and moved to Ocean Hills Country Club in 2015. He joined the Ocean Hills Sailing Club in 2018, became a First Mate, and after nearly 50 sails, earned his captain's credentials in 2021. Today, with well over 100 club sails to his credit, Larry is happiest whenever there's wind in the sails and friends aboard. Among his favorite memories are a magical evening sail while Bonnie Raitt performed at The Rady Shell and competed in four OHSC Regattas — including a first-place finish in 2025. He especially enjoys leading training sails, helping newer members gain confidence on the water, and has even passed his love of sailing on to his grandson. When he's not sailing, Larry's talents continue to impress. He's active in the Woodchucks woodworking club, serving as Vice President, is a three-time local pickleball tournament champion, enjoys restoring RVs, and practices the fascinating craft of lutherie — the art of building and repairing stringed musical instruments. It is a hobby requiring remarkable precision, craftsmanship and patience — qualities that also serve him well at the helm of a sailboat. Whether he's shaping wood into a fine musical instrument or trimming sails on San Diego Bay, Larry exemplifies the craftsmanship, dedication, and generosity that make the Ocean Hills Sailing Club such a special community.
