We often get questions about the lane lines in the pool. Their primary purpose is to reduce wave action by absorbing and dispersing the water turbulence created while swimming. This helps keep the water calmer so that swimmers avoid getting mouthfuls of water when they take a breath. Lane lines also help organize traffic by giving swimmers a designated space, thus reducing collisions. This is especially the case when doing the backstroke. In our OHCC pool, the lane lines are in place from 6 - 8:45 am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Mondays, they are removed at 10:30 am, when the pool briefly closes for a deep cleaning. The remaining three days - Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, they are removed at 11 am. Our current lane lines were replaced in the fall of 2023. We had been struggling with the frequent breakage of our old, rusty, fragile lines. Please remember - NEVER climb or crawl over the lines. That severely impacts their longevity. Swim under or walk around to the other side of the pool to access your lane. We want these lines to last a long time! Our next Wellness presentation will be later this month on Fri., Sept. 11, at 1:30 pm on the Lanai. We will be welcoming Dr. Bryan Hawkins, D.O., who is board-certified in family medicine and neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM). NMM is a specialized branch of osteopathic medicine focused on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the nerves, muscles, bones and joints. It's a specialty designation that few physicians in the U.S. have achieved. His approach to health care is anchored by hands-on osteopathic manipulative therapy and innovative treatments to restore function and reduce pain without relying on drugs or surgery. Mark your calendar for this interesting presentation. Our Summer Lunch Social was held in June. Close to 60 members gathered on the Lanai for lunch and socialization. We aren't like most clubs who "play" together with friends. Lap swimming, for example, is generally a solitary sport. So, a social event like this gives us a chance to get to know other pool enthusiasts and wellness seekers without getting wet! Our club charter states these purposes: • Promote swimming and other water exercise as beneficial, safe and fun • Promote a healthy lifestyle through wellness education • Recommend scheduling for optimum use and safety of the pool • Actively support compliance with pool usage rules • Advocate for the pool facility and equipment maintenance with the Recreation Department and the Master Board Interested in helping the club with these goals? We are an informal group that gathers on the Palm Court to socialize and listen to music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. In the past, every household brought a dish to share potluck style. If you are comfortable with this, please bring your salad, entree, casserole, hot dish, dessert, etc. along with a serving utensil for the buffet table. If you do not wish to share with the community, please bring your own meal. Everything else is "bring your own", i.e. beverages, dishes, utensils, cups, glasses, napkins. Outdoor games are welcome! For more information and to get on the contact list, email ohccboomers@aol.com. Written by Karla Sando Boomers What could be better than a summer aernoon at the pool!
