It is a time of ref lection, renewal, and a gentle reminder to slow down and appreciate life's simple pleasures. ~ Chris Allmer, Blinkist There is no better way to slow down and enjoy life's simple pleasures than to grab a book, find your happy place and begin! Our library at OHCC provides an endless supply of great reads. Wild Instinct by T. Jefferson Parker is one of these novels. It is a story of power, control, betrayal and vengeance centered in a background of family relationships, struggle and belief. It centers around Orange County Sheriff 's detective Lew Gale, former Marine sniper who has recently returned from Afghanistan and is still suffering from Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder. A descendent of the Acjachemen indigenous tribe of Southern California, Lew is assigned to track and shoot a mountain lion that has killed a man in Casper's Park. The plot becomes intriguing when Lew discovers that the victim, a rich developer, was dead long before the lion got to him. The pursuit begins to find the real killer. Parker's favorite genre is the mystery novel. He has been recognized twice by the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar (Allen Poe) Award for best novel, Silent Joe, in 2002 and Californian Girl in 2005. Silent Joe also received the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for best Mystery Thriller. His first novel, Laguna Heat was made into an HBO movie in 1987 starring Jason Robards. He has written and published 25 novels between 1985 and 2026, so watch for his next adventure. He is also a neighbor of ours, residing in Fallbrook, California where he spends his time with this family, hiking, hunting and playing tennis. We are excited to announce that T. Jefferson Parker will also be appearing Sept. 20 in Abravanel Hall for our next Afternoon with Authors Series presentation.
