While the best tennis players in the
world were in New York at the USTA
Billie Jean King National Tennis
Center in Flushing Meadows (not sure
what that means, but best that I leave it alone) playing in the United
States Open Tennis Tournament, one of the four Grand Slam tennis
events of the year, at Four Seasons Beaumont we were playing the
tennis portion of the Senior Olympics at The Courts. That's much
simpler than USTABJKNTCIFM.
There were eight of Four Seasons' best men and four top women
playing a round robin of doubles. Thekla Seigman and Laura
Emerson collected the gold and Bernadette Chance and Bernadette
Lombardo grabbed the silver medals. On the men's side, the gold
medals went to Larry Zimmerman and Tito Calderon, followed
by silver for Chuck Beckman and Stan Lam, with Rich Rojko and
Richard Carasco collecting the bronze medals. A big thank you
goes to Tracy Mahan for keeping all the scores on a complex matrix
and for not playing and whacking folks with her forceful forehands.
The Mixed Doubles competition was scheduled to be played after
the deadline for the Breeze, so the results will be shared next month.
Mike Olson continues to manage the recycling project, generating
significant funding ($88 in August; staying hydrated helped us out)
that supports the activities of the club. Look for the email reminders
about collection dates, typically every other month.
The Saturday Drills start time in October will be 8:30 am but will
likely change to 9 am in November as the weather cools. Play Days
are held on the last Saturday of each month, unless there is a special
club event. All residents are welcome at the Drills and Play Days.
The Tennis Club Committee meets monthly on the last Monday at
4 pm at The Summit. Members are welcome to attend, but don't
interfere with the ladies' card game or give the mahjong players a
dirty look when they start smacking their tiles on the table; they're
a bit sensitive.
