| OHCC LIVING | OCTOBER 2026 | 37 Walkers and Hikers Are you new to OHCC, and perhaps to California? Two years ago, when my husband and I moved here from Seattle, we were unfamiliar with this area's outdoor terrain. Joining the Walkers and Hikers Club was one of the best choices I made. It has enabled me to learn about the region, get out in nature, and enjoy it with like-minded people. There is an incredible variety of landscapes within a short distance of our community, offering sandy beaches, coastal bluffs, wetlands, lagoons, hilltop vistas, desert canyons, and even mountain peaks. One of my favorites is Calavera Hills, located just five miles from the front gate and offering a scenic lake nestled below the dome of an extinct volcano. Bird migration seasons are interesting times to visit the nearby Batiquitos and San Elijo lagoons, and the latter even sports a small slot canyon to slither through. During warmer months the beaches and coastal cliffs are a cool choice for adding steps. After the temps drop in autumn there are plenty of inland trails to explore. As a newcomer, I love hiking with a group. Not only have I made new friends, but there are valuable tidbits of information to glean from others. Rhonda knows the best places to park. Joan and Roberta can add historical perspective. Mark spots and identifies wildlife. Recent excursions included a short, moderately challenging hike to a promontory near Encinitas, and a sunset beach walk at low tide in Carlsbad. The latter was especially popular, with 22 members participating. Thanks to leaders Kevin and Sharon! Whether you are a new or longtime resident, why not join us? If your ideal outing involves staying on level ground for less than three miles, we have walks for you. Or, if you like to rack up some miles over challenging terrain, we have hikes for you. In October, we plan to hike Denk Mountain in Carlsbad, Rose Canyon Trail in La Jolla, the P Trail near San Marcos, and to Peñasquitos Falls in NE San Diego. It's six pool tables, each with a challenging test. Contestants shoot to win cash at each table. If they never miss, they waltz off with $45. Well, everyone did miss, but they all had a great time, and everyone made some money. Here are the results: 1 Charlie Payne $21 5 Dan Wilkerson $11 9 David Key $6 2 Paul Yoshida $16 6 Leo Beeloo $9 10 Cyndi Naumann $5 3 Harris Golden $15 7 Gary Webb $9 11 David Breedlove $5 4 Rick Gooden $13 8 Ken Shafarman $8 12 Janice Pelcher $4 The average player won about $10, but what did they have to pay to play? Nada, zippo, zilch – it's just one of the perks of belonging to the Billiards Club. Not surprisingly, this is our members' favorite event, year after year. Try it yourself - next year. The Billiards Club opens its doors to everyone for a fun Trick Shot Show on Oct. 15 at 1:30. You don't need to be a club member; just "come on down" and have a good time.
