mystery theater & more At our September meeting, the direction committee of Janet Rogers-Staple, Gaylord Spence, Bill Shova and Susan Fitzpatrick shared their idea about their proposed theme for the 2014 edition of "That's Entertainment." The consensus was that at least the first half of the show would feature the theme, "California Here We Come!" with the musical choices of songs, dances and comedy routines from the Golden State that would include California cities or regions. The list of songs that could be included was so immense that it was suggested that familiarity of the songs to our audience be a guiding criteria, as well as selecting songs made a huge impact on the genre of popular music. It was also suggested that we again use the second half of the show to feature staged vignettes of a scaled down version of a Broadway type musical. "Paint Your Wagon" was suggested as that musical. The committee agreed that this was a viable musical to replicate, but cautioned that the production would most likely have to use prerecorded music as the background for the production. The more popular songs are sure to be available, but it was pointed out that unless all of the songs were available in "backing type" tracks this musical might not be possible to produce. The suggested title was taken under advisement by the committee with a promise of in-depth research. A nominating committee for new club officers was formed, headed by Lin Volturo, with the expectation that a full slate of new officer nominees would be proposed to the membership at our business meeting, when we elect officers for new two-year terms that will start in January. The meeting is Tues., Oct. 1 at 1 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. It was also determined that the Michael Parker play, "Sex Please; We're Sixty" will be the play that we will bring to community in May. It's easily seen that for us, 2014 will be an incredibly busy year. If you are new to the community, have a secret desire to be a part of stage production, or just like to be a part of fun, goal-oriented activities, please check us out during our October meeting. You have an open invitation and we'd love to meet you! Info., Ginger Burris, 845-9685. drama club Don't miss our next production "Miracle on South Division Street!" It is the story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY's East Side. The neighborhood may be depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom — a 20 foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father's barber shop! When the play opens, a family meeting is in progress. Daughter Ruth divulges her plan to finally "go public" with the family miracle by creating a one-woman play about the sacred event. But during the course of the meeting, the entire family's faith is shaken to the very core when a deathbed confession causes the family legend to unravel. The results are heartfelt and hilarious. Performances will be Oct. 24, 25, 26 at 7 pm and a matinee at 2 pm on Sun., Oct. 27. There will also be a dinner show on the Saturday night performance.
