Kids and parents invited to Crafton "Come to College" Family Fest on Sat., Oct. 12, from 9 am to 3 pm Parents today are busy but parents of school-age children seem to be extra busy. School, homework, and sports for the kids… then add in their job, chores, recreation, etc. It's no surprise that many families may not even have going to college on their radar. But it's never too soon to start planning for your child's higher education. To encourage parents to start thinking about college and career before their child enters high school, Crafton Hills College is hosting an open house, "Come to College" Family Fest, on Sat., Oct. 12, from 9 am to 3 pm. "Come to College" will offer parents and families an opportunity to learn more about various career opportunities and college programs right in their backyard. Kids dream of being a firefighters, policemen, nurses, even famous actors, but maybe considering a career as a respiratory therapist, paramedic, or teacher is more realistic. Knowing what career path your child is going to take down the road helps you prepare for it. Being prepared means you know what classes your child should take in high school so they can get into college as well as saving money to pay tuition. The "Come to College" Family Fest will have demonstrations from different career fields and workshops on planning for college. There will also be story time in English and Spanish, and a "Share Your Story" session where people of all walks of life will share their personal story of how college changed their life. In fact, Pete Aguilar, Mayor of Redlands, will share his story in a keynote presentation at 9:30 am. But "Come to College" is not all about workshops and working. There will be a lot of fun activities for kids of all ages, including animals to pet, hula hooping and jump roping, arts and crafts to do, a free lunch, and the event will close with a special musical performance by the Yucaipa Performing Arts Council. In addition to Crafton Hills College, San Bernardino Valley College and Mt. San Jacinto College will have booths with information on their college programs, and the Yucaipa Calimesa Unified School District will share information on their programs that prepare students for college and beyond. We know you're busy, but a few hours of fun and learning with your family will pay off in the long run. You'll walk away with information on financial planning for college, and an idea of what college life is like. And your child might just leave with a dream of what they want to be when they grow up.
