Residents bring home medals from "OLDlympics" Congratulations to our resident athletes! We are all so proud of our Four Seasons resident athletes who participated in the 2013 Hemet Senior "OLDlympics" in September and October. Competitors from as far away as Oregon and Colorado were drawn to this 29 -year old event. Randy Balt made daunting waves in the swimming competition, collecting seven gold medals! Pete Antoine impressed the crowd by bench pressing 265 pounds for a gold medal. In a very competitive pickleball event, Gracy Luna brought home the gold and Marty Key proudly displayed her silver. Padoo Peralta, Nancy Barnaby, Linda Snipes and Jesse Aceves also stormed the pickle ball courts, causing event participants to stand up and take notice of our many talented residents. Padoo originally attended the pickleball competition as a spectator, and "got recruited to be in the competition," she says with a grin. Marty made many new connections from other communities to play pickleball. The table tennis competition was very intense, but Don Fant prevailed and was awarded a silver. Pete Antoine, Niles Sundstrom and Gilbert Apodaca also helped to kick the table tennis competition up a notch. Larry Chase chose to compete in the "Funtathlon," a series of several short events which he said were so fun and very well organized. Larry already has plans to attempt the Funtathlon next year, and is spreading the word. By far, however, the track and field competition drew most Four Seasons athletes and also produced the most medals. Jim Cochran won with his eight golds and one silver. Paty Bushnell received two golds, Gracy Luna one gold, Hilario Luna one gold, Niles Sundstrom one gold and three silver, Sharon Chase one silver, along with Jim Bushnell's two silvers and Pete Antoine's silver and bronze. Sharon Chase commented, "I haven't been in a competition for years. It was fun to be back competing again." Niles Sundstrom said: "The high jump was the most fun for me, in addition to watching all the other Four Seasons residents competing, of course." Jim Bushnell said,"I got a kick out of watching my wife, Paty, competing in the track events." Jim Cochran most enjoyed the discus throw. When asked if one of his numerous gold medals was for his throw, he answered simply, "Yup!" Hilario Luna took off work to participate in the Texas Hold 'Em event, along with Larry Chase and Pete Antoine. "For sure I'm going to participate again next year!" says Hilario. Although the awards ceremony was the culmination of the "OLDlympics," it's not only the medals potential that drives these athletes. It's also the pure love of their chosen sport(s) and the enthusiasm for the competition that makes their individual journeys so enjoyable and memorable. Congratulations to each and every resident athlete for putting Four Seasons on the OLDympics radar, and making all the rest of us so very proud! ~ Eileen Gilbert-Antoine Resident athletes show off medals.
