4 OUR YUCAIPA | MARCH 2014 | CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | OUR YUCAIPA | MARCH 2014 5 Mission Statement The Yucaipa Valley Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting a vibrant business environment by cooperative interaction among business, government and community For more information, call (909) 790-1841 • Fax (909) 363-7373 35139 Yucaipa Blvd., Yucaipa, CA 92399 info@yucaipachamber.org "The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax." ~ Albert Einstein As the tax deadline approaches this year we have the privilege to pay to live in the greatest nation in God's creation. I have had the opportunity to visit a couple of countries around the world but I know it was always wonderful to return home. I knew a pilot who flew A7s in the Middle East in one of our conflicts. As he tells me the story of him flying home with his squadron and catching his first glimpse of the Carolina coast he admits a tear came to his eyes. So it is my pleasure to pay for the freedom and security our nation provides for me and my family. What I don't understand is why successful people are treated like common criminals if they have, what some believe, is too large a bank account. It is also my belief that the government and the working man should both celebrate each time a large bonus is "earned" for the state and federal governments get a very large portion of the check. So the next time you hear of some athlete, banker or CEO getting a large sum of money just think how much was given to the government to help keep us safe and secure when we lay our heads down to sleep. As an employer I want to be the one who makes enough to hand a bonus to those who help me succeed. In the beginning of Wal-Mart a potential store manager had to sit down with Sam Walton for an interview and asked Mr. Sam when discussing the bonus program "what if my store makes this large amount of money." Mr. Sam informed him that if he made a lot of money then the company would be doing great and Wal-Mart could open even more stores. Well, that was just another of many decisions Wal- Mart made to become a worldwide cooperation. So don't misunderstand and think I like to pay taxes, but I do understand it is a part of living in this great nation. Plus I have a well-educated accountant who ensures that I do not pay more than my fair share. I hope you and I are in the top percentile of those who assist in paying for the Marines, policemen, firemen and others who help keep us safe. The moral of my story is with hard work and integrity we can employ, mentor and assist others in earning enough income to also contribute to the well-being of this great nation. a message from the chairman 2014 Board of Directors Chairman, Jim Hammond Comfort Keepers Chair-Elect, Nancy Kenny PrimeLending Finance Vice-Chair, Jason Ross Law Office of Linda Roberts-Ross Directors Dr. Cheryl Marshall Crafton Hills College Dora Ordonez Asaderos Restaurant & Supermarket Cheryl Benton NuSkin Eric Vreeman YCJUSD Jeff Dewan Edward Jones Financial Advisors Lynnette Alvarado Wildwood Canyon Villa CHAMBER STAFF Pamela Emenger, President/CEO Ellen Benefiel, Membership Development Coordinator AMBASSADOR TEAM David Avila, Retired Cal Fire Battalion Chief Cheryl Benton, NuSkin Pamela Brierley-Vengarick, Good Nite Inn Marlyn Crampton, Yucaipa Rotary Club Jeff Dewan, Edward Jones Marie Feuer, Life Path Healings Brandy Gomez, Law Office of Linda Roberts-Ross Debbie Harber, Sequoia Digital Marketing Nancy Kenny, PrimeLending Michelle Lopez, AVON Paul Norwood, Safe Harbor Internet Services Dora Ordonez, Asaderos Supermarket Samantha Short, Yucaipa Wellness Center MJ Turner, Ready 2 Wag 3: Small/Home Based Business Committee Meeting 8:30 am. Yucaipa Valley Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Pamela Emenger and Membership Development Coordinator Ellen Benefiel took time on Sat., Feb. 8, to attend the Inland Prosperity Conference sponsored by the Inland Empire Center for Entrepreneurship, Cal State San Bernardino and the U.S. Small Business Administration. They were quite impressed with the workshops, speakers and information they learned. Some of the topics covered were "Top 5 Ways to Attract Corporate Sponsors," "How to Build a Wildly Successful Business," "Overcoming the Sales Blocks that Keep You in Scarcity" and "Going for It! Taking the Leap to Achieve Your Dreams." They made some great contacts and will be pursuing a few of the speakers to come to Yucaipa and speak to our members about building their businesses.
