It's the re-creation of an era that most of us have only heard about. The men wore black striped suites and they met in "Speak Easy's" and drank gin made in bathtubs. The women wore short skirts and were called "Flappers." The dance, the Charleston, was unique and everything was fast. The 1920s were an age of dramatic social and political change. For the first time, more Americans lived in cities than on farms. The nation's total wealth more than doubled between 1920 and 1929, and this economic growth swept many Americans into an affluent but unfamiliar "consumer society." People from coast to coast bought the same goods (thanks to nationwide advertising and the spread of chain stores), listened to the same music, did the same dances and even used the same slang! However, for a small handful of young people in the nation's big cities, the 1920s were roaring indeed. No charge and no obligation. Come and see what our club is about and if you are willing, you can learn a basic line dance or two and a basic couples dance. This August dance is also an opportunity for our more experienced dancers to demonstrate a few of our favorite dances, if we can remember them. One of the really nice features of Country Western dancing is that everyone, singles and couples, are equally welcomed to come learn a dance and have a good time. The introductory dance will be Aug. 22, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Mark your calendar and plan on coming. Do you have a reluctant partner? Drag them out of the house and bring them so they can meet some new friends, have a drink, and be entertained. Who knows, they might even have a good time. In September, we will start our dance instructions with very basic dances. Line dance instruction begins on Mon., Sept. 8, 7 to 8:30 pm, South Clubhouse. Couples instruction begins Tues., Sept. 16, 7 to 8:30 pm, South Clubhouse. Our first Country Western Dance this season will be Fri., Sept. 12, at 7 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Always check our Lifestyles article for activities, times and places. Info., Joe or Jean, 769-9148. Country Western Dance A Night To Remember… Our popular dinner, show and international fashion show will be Sat., Sept. 13 from 5 to 9 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. Those of you who have attended before know what a great show this is. For those of you who will be attending for the first time, it will be a very special evening. This is our annual fundraiser and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity. Tickets are $35 pp and the attire is semi- formal. The dinner choices will consist of pork tenderloin with mango salsa or champagne salmon. Ticket sales will be held from Aug. 4 through Aug. 8 from 9 am to 2 pm in the Main Clubhouse Lobby. Come early for best table selection. This event is open to all Sun Lakes residents and their guests. For information regarding this event, contact Nora Huffman at 845-8333 or e-mail at jonnora@msn.com. International Dancers Big Band Dance When the Enns entertain their songs always tell us a love story. Their duet tells us "I can't believe you're in love with me" and that "Everywhere You Go" "That Lucky Old Son" wants "The Nearness Is You." The story continues with Burt singing "The Object Of My Affection." The love story ends with Bettie, and Harold doing their version of "The Man That I Marry" "The girl That I Marry." Harold leaves us feeling very proud to be an American with "God Bless America." Thank you, Bettie, Harold, and Burt for another great show. We meet the 2nd Saturday of every month at the South Clubhouse at 3 pm. September is a catered dinner $10 per person to Dianna reservations by Aug. 30, 845-1182. Info., Barb, 845-7904 or Carol, 769-7382. 80s Plus Club
