soCIal Clubs & Groups | sun lakes lIfestyles | auGust 2014 | 17 Here it is August already and the our annual Classical Violin and Piano Concert at the Main Clubhouse is Aug. 3 at 2 pm. Once again Maki Sowash and her friends from Japan will be performing an afternoon of delightful music for the enjoyment of their Sun Lakes friends. Maki is the daughter in law of Lorene Sowash of Sun Lakes. Lorene and her late husband Fred began sponsoring these concerts through the Drama Club nine years ago and the concerts have become a tradition for fine music lovers at Sun Lakes. Maki is a violinist for the San Francisco Opera Company and she and her friends are well known performers throughout Japan. In addition, they pay their own way to come here to play for us. The cost per ticket is $10 and the tickets go on sale in the lobby of the Main Clubhouse on July 21, from 9 am to 2 pm. A wonderful after the concert champagne reception will be held at the South Clubhouse. Finger foods will be provided along with champagne. Ladies of the Drama Club will act as hostesses. The reception is available for an additional $5 pp and is limited to the first 100 people who purchase tickets. The performers will be circulating at the reception to meet and socialize. We encourage one and all to support the Stardust Dancers Annual Charity Luncheon and Show on Fri., Aug. 29 at the Main Clubhouse. The cost is $20 pp and all proceeds from the accompanying raffle will go to the Veteran's Village of San Diego, a worthwhile charity that assists returning veterans in their re-assimilation after service to our country. All veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms or medals. Our fall play has been cast and rehearsals are beginning for the production of "Alone Together Again." This is a charming comedy of a family in which the children have moved out and the grandparents are moving in to the dismay of the parents who had been anticipating time for themselves. Play dates are the end of October. More information will be forthcoming in the September Lifestyles. The storage clean out performed this summer by the Drama Club and the Mystery Theatre was an outstanding success and now reusable theatre items are stored in a manner that promotes their reuse and protection. Many thanks to everyone who participated in the clean out and inventory. Anyone interested in joining the Drama Club is encouraged to call Rose Hermanson at 769-9810. Drama Club On the second Thursday in August we will be celebrating the Philippine Islands. As you already know, we share a long history with them and much hardship and suffering by their people and our military stationed there. After we fought our way through the Pacific and eventually freed them, they held a referendum at the close of the war and voted to be an independent nation in their own right. Our doors will open at 5:30 pm, music by Jon Destry for listening and dancing pleasure starts at 6 pm. The dinner buffet starts at 6:30 pm by table call and is generally over by 7:30 pm. It will feature some traditional Philippine dishes, which are very similar to Asian. We will have Hawaiian dinner rolls and butter, an appetizer of lumpia (veggie egg rolls with sweet and sour sauce) chicken adobo, pancit with baby shrimp and rice noodles, fried rice and oriental vegetables. Coconut ice cream with an almond cookie and mango wedge will be served for dessert along with coffee and iced tea on a side board. Sign ups are Thurs., Aug. 7, at 3 pm in the North Clubhouse. Cost is $22 for a member, $25 for a non-resident guest. If you find that you cannot attend after signing up, call Martie Steggell at 769-3217 for a takeout box. Info., Diane, 769-9308.
