OUR YUCAIPA | AUGUST 2014 11 Crafton Hills College proudly announces the opening of its Kinesiology, Health Education and Aquatics Complex for the fall semester. The new complex's contemporary design utilizes the magnificent views of the valley surrounding the campus. "It's all about design," stated John Wirfs, an architect with the project. "The new buildings made use of space that had been previously occupied by shrubbery, showing what vision and creativity can achieve," according to Dr. Bonnie James of Kitchell/BRJ, the construction management team. The Kinesiology, Health Education and Aquatics Complex includes a 3,100 square foot fitness center, yoga studio, dance studio, as well as faculty offices and storage. The new buildings are next to the college's Aquatics Center and feature a masonry veneer and a custom aluminum curtain wall. Completing the cluster concept began with the Aquatics Center, the new buildings are not solely about Kinesiology and health. They will allow Crafton Hills College to expand the fine arts being offered beyond art, music, and theatre to include modern dance and ballet, according to Rick Hogrefe, who, as Dean of Arts & Sciences, is the "proud papa" of the complex. A multipurpose room will have the capability of being divided into two classrooms by a soundproof divider. The dance studio incorporates windows showcasing scenic views and a spring floor that will allow dancers to learn and express themselves with less risk of injury. The colors utilized in the three large rooms are soft and relaxing blues, greys, greens, and yellows that direct your attention to the views from the large windows. The Kinesiology, Health Education & Aquatics Complex is a manifestation of the evolving discussion about the wellness of students as people. "What does it take to make these people healthy, not just as students, but as community members?" asked architect John Wirfs. "Design is always at the service of people," he said. The vision of Kinesiology and health at Crafton Hills College is now manifesting itself with the opening of this facility. Crafton Hills College is grateful to Tuff Stuff in Chino and Iron Company in Rancho Cucamonga who outfitted the fitness center. Xavier Adrian, the project manager from Kitchell/BRJ, said the fact the new complex looks like it has always been here is a testimony to design. The project was bid 15 months ago and construction began in August of 2013 and was completed this July by a great team effort. Classes will begin in the new building in August and future plans include adding community courses to the already open swim times offered at the Aquatics Center.
