COMMUNITy NEwS | FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2014 9 Neighborly Notes By Bobbie Eckel NatioNal Night out Mark your calendars for the Neighborhood Watch National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 5:30 pm in the Lodge Ballroom. A potluck sign-up sheet has been out since July at the Lodge front desk. Guest speakers will be from our local agencies and the city of Beaumont. Plan to attend. The event is very informative – and the food and community camaraderie very special too. CERt tRaiNiNg Beaumont is sponsoring another Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training in September. This is a free program which educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards which may impact their area, and trains citizens in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Call the Civic Center for additional information or you may sign up online through the Beaumont Newsletter which is published the second and fourth Friday of each month. mEmoRiEs to mEmoiRs Beaumont's Lunch and Learn session on Aug. 28 (from 11 am to 1 pm) concerns Memories to Memoirs. It will be held at the Albert A. Chatigny Community Center on 1310 Oak Valley Parkway. Participants will learn how to create a memoir which will be enjoyed by others for years to come. The event is sponsored by InterValley Health. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to (951) 769-8539. sENioR softball It's time again to sign up for softball! The Valley-wide Senior Softball League is looking for new members; interested players must be 55 or better and be ready to have some fun on the field. Winter and summer seasons are scheduled; the cost is only $30 and you play at least 40 games each season. All levels of play are included. Game days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Practice days are Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30 until 9:30 am. Modified ASA rules are utilized. The League plays at Valley Wide Recreation Center in San Jacinto. Please call (951) 927-4509 to sign up or to obtain additional information. summER CoNCERt sERiEs The city of Beaumont's Seventh Annual free Summer Concert Series continues for another week at Stewart Park on 9th and Orange in Beaumont. The concert begins at 7:30 pm. You can enjoy food from the Market Night vendors or bring your own picnic. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets, and a light wrap to ward off the chill when the sun goes down. The event sponsors a DJ and a free swim in the pool. iNtERNatioNal DRiViNg PERmit If you are planning trip(s) abroad and hope to drive through a foreign countryside, you may discover that you need an International Driving Permit (IDP). In the June issue of Westways, the magazine published by the Automobile Association of America, the author describes this permit and notes that the IDP is valid for one year and is an official translation of a U.S. driver's license into 11 languages. The IDP is accepted by more than 150 countries. The country that issues your regular driver's license must also issue the IDP; travelers are reminded to get the permit before leaving the U.S. Many Central and South American countries will also accept an Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP) which must also be issued by the country which issued your driver's license. The back of the IDP and IADP each have a list of the countries in which you can use them. PEt safEtY The Beaumont July/August Senior Newsletter contains reminders for pet safety and resident safety during the hot summer months. It also gives specifics about the Scammers who continue to prey on the older population. Call Beaumont Senior Services, (951) 769-8539, to get on their mailing list. Carlin-isms for the month: Are part-time band leaders semi-conductors? Do people in Australia call the rest of the world "up over"?
