During several weeks in September and October, several residents in our Four Seasons community participated in the Hemet "Oldlympics" in its 30th year. The events culminated in an awards banquet held Oct. 7 at the Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District in Hemet. Following are the medals received, and comments by each recipient: Jesse Aceves: Earned a gold medal in pickle ball. He was impressed with the competitive level of the other players. Next year? Basketball, bench press, decathlon! Brian Anderson: Won three gold medals in swimming: 25- yard free style; 50- yard free style; 25-yard back stroke ~ and he only trained for three weeks! Pete Antoine: One gold in bench press (275 lbs.), golds in the 400 meter run and 1500 meter walk, as well as silvers in basketball and billiards. He's already planning what events to enter next year. Sue Barker: Was awarded a silver medal in pickle ball. She is excited to show her medal to her grandchild who participates in the Special Olympics. Nancy Barnaby: After receiving her gold medal for pickle ball, said she "enjoys being with other competitive women." Next year she'll try track and field as well. Richard Carrasco: Received gold in chair volleyball, silvers in doubles tennis and the Funtathlon, and bronze medals in mixed doubles tennis and pickleball. For sure he'll sign up for 2015. Dee Kelch: Although she didn't medal in billiards, she has increased her resolve to improve her game and challenge the women again next year. Lian Lee: Received a bronze medal in table tennis. She enjoys the other players' responses to making or missing a shot. Gracy Luna: Gold for Gracy in the 1500 meter walk! And her husband, Hilario won gold in the same race! Yay! Gracy already has plans to add to next year's events: 400 meter run, basketball, standing long jump, and soft ball throw. She says, "I'll keep competing until I'm on the other side of the grass." Barry Pope: Received a bronze medal in table tennis doubles. He enjoyed the friendly people, and how well the event was organized. Niles Sundstrom: Gold medal in doubles table tennis, and was honored to be the first person to win gold in this event. Other winners: Adrian Zarr achieved silver in pickle ball, and Gilbert Apodaca won silver in table tennis.
