soCIal CluBs & gRoups | sun lakes lIfestyles | deCeMBeR 2014 | 19 The 411 on the Mystery Theater: our members have been extremely busy this past month in preparing for the upcoming "That's Entertainment" show, "The Music of Guys and Dolls (& More). Roles have been cast, songs have been selected, and dance rehearsals have begun. The production and music will be directed by Sun Lakes' own Michael Owen (show) and Lou Evans (music), who have brilliantly re-imagined this renowned Broadway production. The first half of the show is superbly choreographed by Susan Fitzpatrick, and features Sun Lakes' creative dancers and singers. They will be performing romantic numbers, such as "Where the Boys Are," "Makin' Whoopee," "My Guy," and more. The second half of the show is an "adaptation," featuring musical numbers from the Broadway hit "Guys and Dolls." The setting is based on Damon Runyon's mythical New York, where this oddball romantic comedy, which is considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a cast of vivid characters and legendary musical scores. Save the date! Confirmed dates for the show are Feb. 26, 27, 28 and March 1. If you are interested in participating in this production, please contact Bill Shova at 845-0547, or Lou Evans at 769-8556. Watch for future announcements on this exciting production, you won't want to miss it! Don't just be a spectator, participate! If you can sing, dance, paint, sew, wherever your talents may lie, we need you! Join us at our next meeting on Dec. 2, at 1 pm, held in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom stage end. See you there! Mystery Theater & More We are always looking for appropriate and enjoyable material to offer to the Sun Lakes community. It isn't always possible to find plays that are amenable for our club to produce. People often ask why we present all women plays — it isn't always possible to find enough men who are willing to audition and invest the time it requires to memorize and rehearse a part for production. In the past few years we have also had to deal with the competition from the many new production companies that have sprung up in the Pass Area. This competition involves audience participation and actors willing to take parts. As a result, the Board of Directors for the Drama Club is continually faced with the problems of finding plays that can be done with our limited casting possibilities. We are also limited due to the fact that our population here is all over the age of 55. We have done plays in the past where one of the parts is for an ingénue or young man very much younger and that is extremely limiting. It does strain our audience credulity when the actors are obviously not anywhere near the age required for the part. So we end up doing plays we can cast within our limitations. In addition, the Main Ballroom stage and facility use are limiting. We must use the time set aside for us judiciously. Our sets must be constructed just a few days in advance of our performances and dismantled the very afternoon of our last performance. All this requires great professionalism of our casts and hard work all around. But for all our members the results are most satisfying and rewarding. Being an actor/performer requires talent and steadfast dedication to the end result. And for those of us eager to participate the end certainly justifies the means. Any and all people living in Sun Lakes are more than welcome to come and join us in the production of plays. If you are interested please attend a meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 1 pm in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom or call Rose Hermanson at 769- 9810 for more information. Drama Club
