22 | sun lakes lIfestyles | JanuaRy 2015 | soCIal Clubs & gRoups Yiddish Culture Club We're busy doing something - Working the whole day through straining our brains finding ideas for you! We've happily planned a dinner, entertainment that will be great. The hall will ring with laughter as we gather to celebrate! We will laugh 'til our sides ache as we are entertained by actor, writer and comedian Annie Korzen who we have all seen in roles in Seinfeld, Whitney, and The Exes as well as in Tootsie, Stardust Memories, and Nobody's Perfect, which she co-wrote. Most recently she appeared as John Turturro's mother in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Jason Alexander's sister in Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue and will soon be seen in Embryo, directed by Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen. Korzen has written, composed and performed two solo shows, is a speaker on the lecture circuit with interactive talks and performs an evening of humorous stories. Annie is a graduate of Bard College and her droll commentaries have been heard on NPR's Morning Edition while her essays have been printed in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle and Jewish Journal of LA. She has also done many spoken-word performances at Comedy Central's Sit ' Spin, Tasty Words, and Sparks. Best of all she is also a senior citizen! The date for this affair is Wed., Jan. 14, at 6 pm where club members and guests will also partake of a mouth watering dinner in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom after a short installation of our officers for this new year. The cost of this dinner is $17 pp for members and $24 pp for guests. The menu includes a dinner salad of tomatoes, cucumbers and mushrooms with ranch and/or raspberry vinaigrette dressing, and rolls. You will have a pre-selected choice of champagne salmon filet, lemon chicken, or pasta primavera (loaded with veggies). Dinner will also include roasted new potatoes and green beans almondine. For dessert we will delightedly partake of the parfait with berries that was so well received last year. Reservation forms are in the Yiddish Culture Club slot in the Main Clubhouse entrance. Make sure to check your choice of main course. Paid reservations must be received no later than Jan. 7. Please send your reservations to Diane Stone, 1800 Litchfield Dr., Banning, CA 92220. If you wish to reserve a table for as many as eight or nine people, all names, dinner selections, and checks must accompany the reservation. Info., D. Stone, 769-0130. We're looking forward to seeing you all there. Come join us and immerse yourself in the music of the Kingston Trio on Jan. 11, in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom. It didn't "take a worried man to sing a worried song" when the Kingston Trio joined the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and took an enthusiastic audience of 1,784 on a songful trip down memory lane. Nobody in Symphony Hall seemed worried about anything at all as they sang and clapped along with folk chestnuts like "This Land Is Your Land," "Jamaica Farewell," and the Massachusetts-specific anthem "Charlie on the M.T.A." Many classic groups spawn tribute bands, but those bands are just that — tributes. These three guys have been singing these songs since they were kids, and have sung them with the guys who made them famous. The songs are as much a part of who they are as musicians as lullabies learned at their mothers' knees, and they sing them with the care, love, and ease that comes with long-time familiarity, For those of us who used to sing along with "Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley" as teenagers, it will be as though the years are rolled away. With this trio you get to do it again. Don't miss this one. Members: $20; non-resident guests: $25. Checks to "Friendship Club," deposit into box at 985 Southern Hills Dr. For cancellations and other info., call Judy at 797-0265. On Feb. 8, we will present Take Me Home: The Music of John Denver, featuring Jim Curry. Curry headlined the very first tribute concert in Las Vegas in 2006, and continues to do regular shows at the Silverton Hotel and Casino. $20 members, $25 non-resident guests. The Friendship Club
