EXCURSIONS Back to the Past… Historic Rancho Cucamonga Tues., April 7, 9 am - 4 pm, $51 pp. Sam Maloof was a furniture designer and woodworker. Maloof 's work is in the collections of several major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In 1985 he was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan have both owned Maloof rockers. He was described by the Smithsonian Institution as "America's most renowned contemporary furniture craftsman" and People Magazine dubbed him "The Hemingway of Hardwood." We'll enjoy the day visiting his historic residence, workshop and gardens located in the foothills of Rancho Cucamonga. After our tour of the Maloof House we will be treated to lunch at the Soup Plantation. Their food is made from scratch every day. Within 24 hours of being in the ground, it's on a refrigerated truck on its way to the restaurants. Their salad bar buffet features over 50 fresh ingredients, including specialty tossed and prepared salads. In addition to salads, they serve original recipe hot pastas, hand-crafted soups, scratch-made muffins and Focaccia breads in their hot buffet. Create, indulge and enjoy. After lunch we will tour the John Rains House where he planted 160 acres of vines in 1859. Wine and brandy made at Cucamonga gained wide popularity. An earlier small vineyard and winery is said to date back to 1939, thus establishing the claim that Cucamonga has the oldest commercial winery in the state. The Rains House was built in 1860 by Ohio brick masons from brick made by Joseph Mullaly from the red clay on the site. Its flat roof was waterproofed by tar from the Brea pits in Los Angeles. An open flume carried water from springs through the kitchen, into the patio and under the house to the orchard, thereby providing cooling for the structure. The original house had an entry hall, a parlor and three bedrooms in the front, with a patio area flanked by a dining room, a kitchen, a padres room and two guest rooms. The John Rains house was very innovated for its time and an extremely important part of California's remarkable history. EXCURSION SIGN UPS: MON., FEB. 2, 8 AM L.A.
