24 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2015 | SOCIAL CLUBS & GROUPS Cruzin' Cronies Here's more history of the auto industry that we've been sharing to encourage your interest in our club, the Cruzin' Cronies. During World War II, there was unprecedented growth of new factories, jobs, and enlarging and retooling of others to support the war effort. Afterwards, automakers scrambled to retool their factories again, and there was a great shortage of materials. Working conditions were very poor, and safety was not a concern. Auto workers began to demand improved conditions and fair pay. After a lot of labor unrest, the United Automobile Workers Union was recognized by GM and Chrysler in 1937 and by Ford in 1941. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, the American auto industry was booming. President Dwight D. Eisenhower visualized a connected system of freeways strong enough to transport heavy wartime equipment anywhere across America in case of a surprise attack. Congress authorized construction of the Interstate Highway System in 1956. Cruzin' Cronies displays its pristine collection of older cars at 8 am on Sat., Feb. 7 at the Main Clubhouse parking lot. Breakfast follows at a designated restaurant. For info, call Sandra Glickman at 692-6991. Car of the Month February's featured car is a 1959 Chevy station wagon owned by Basil and Janet Dahl, who have been Cruzin' Cronies members since they came to Sun Lakes in 2010. Bas and Janet maintain a residence in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, as well as a home here in Sun Lakes. Bas became interested in cars when he was in high school in Anaheim. His first car was a '56 Chevy pickup, which he bought when he was a sophomore and the truck was new in 1956. He's been a devoted car collector all his life, with at least nine different classic automobiles presently housed in his 4400 square foot garage in Lake Havasu City. Besides his prized '59 Chevy pickup, which has never been shown publicly, Bas owns a '66 and an '86 Corvette, both of which have been shown in car shows and have won trophies. With his '56 Pontiac, he did 9 shows in 2014, winning four best-in-shows and three other awards. Besides Cruzin' Cronies, Bas belongs to Corvettes of Southern California and Pacific Coast Corvettes. You can spot Bas and Janet around SLCC in their red '08 Ford pickup or their '03 Hummer. Bible Study Our Bible study group is non- denominational. All are welcome.
