22 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2015 | SOCIAL CLUBS & GROUPS Yiddish Culture Club Think back to some of the humor that has made you laugh over the years. When we were children we laughed at slapstick comedy — at least some of us enjoyed seeing others falling over their own feet. As we grew up and matured a bit more we laughed at the antics of the Marx Brothers — Harpo was my favorite. We always left one of those films feeling good. Entering into adulthood our laughter came from comedians such as Jack Benny whose comedy, although more mature, was based on making fun of himself. Still he left us laughing with a good feeling. Many of these comedians, who we first heard on radio and then saw on film and TV used the same approach. It seemed to work and we all laughed, felt good and that is what comedy was all about — feeling good! But over the years another subject has become the focus of a different type of comedy. And this is what will be explored when the Yiddish Club visits the Tolerance Education Center in Rancho Mirage during our March 11 field trip. We will car pool there and back, visit the center, have a box lunch and enjoy the documentary Mamadrama: The Jewish Mother in film. Through film clips, cultural commentary, and interviews with Hollywood and Israeli filmmakers the film explores the image of not merely the Jewish mother but likens it to mothers from many different cultures and ethnicity. Remember Lainie Kazan's role as the mother in My Big Fat Greek Wedding? It includes films beginning with early silent and Yiddish films through contemporary movies with interviews of directors as well as actors. Critics have proclaimed it a "must see" for all mothers, not just Jewish ones! We will leave Sun Lakes by 11:15 am. The Tolerance Center has a covered outdoor patio where we can enjoy our choice of boxed lunch. After lunch we can explore the facilities until the time for the film at 1:30 pm. The cost for this outing, including lunch, is $10 for members and $12 for guests. There will be no meeting on that Wednesday evening. See the flyer in the Main Clubhouse for your reservation form. All reservations must be prepaid. Info., Diane, 769-0130. Friendship Club Presents Piano Men - A Musical Journey through the 70s featuring the music of Elton John and Billy Joel. Doors open at 6 pm, show at 7 pm on March 8, starring Jim Witter. Jim Witter grew up in Canada playing music. His debut album, Jim Witter, was released in 1993. The first single, "Everything and More," entered the National Country Chart at No. 40, at the time a first for a debut Canadian single. Every single released from the album reached the top 10 on the Canadian country singles chart, including "Distant Drum," "Stolen Moments," "Sweet Sweet Poison" and "Chevy Coupe." Witter received a 1994 Juno nomination for Best New Solo Artist, an award that covered all genres of music, as well as a nomination for Best Country Male Vocalist. Travel back to the '70s and the nostalgic world of Jim Witter's Piano Men. Whether you actually lived through the cool '70s or you are just a fan of the decade, this show will take you on a heart warming stroll back in time. It's a year by year musical multi-media feast of favorites that will leave you wishing that the evening would never end. Dove/Juno nominee Jim Witter and his band are not only masterful entertainers but they create a magic that makes you immediately feel like you are surrounded by long lost friends. Jim will bring you into a musical reunion with the things that turned the '70s into the "wonder years." He presents a musical tapestry that features the most loved hits of Billy Joel and Elton John celebrating the toys, the television, and the trivia that made us who we are today. Piano Men gives us the rare opportunity to put our cares aside and to view the world once again through the eyes of our youth. You'll laugh. You'll cheer. You'll sing out loud. And when you leave, you may just find a new spring in your step as you find yourself using old phrases again like "far out" or "sit on it!" On April 12, we want you to join us for the Golden Era of Harmony with the Four Preps and the New Chordettes. It will be a 90 minute show without intermission. $20 Members, $25 for non-resident guests. Checks to "Friendship Club." Deposit into box at 5168 Rio Bravo. For cancellations and other info., call Judy 797-0265. The Friendship Club
