FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2015 45 Table Tennis Ping pong is a fun game and fun is what we have here at beautiful Four Seasons as we play on a recreational level. Occasionally however, some of our players like to take the game to the next level where it is still fun, but becomes much more competitive and serious in nature. There is no better venue to do just that than the annual Palm Desert International Sports Festival and Senior Games. This year the table tennis competition was held over two days, Feb. 12 and 13. This tournament, because of its status and because of the coveted medals it offers, draws top players from all over California and even a few from out of state. The players it drew from our own Four Seasons Ping Pong Club were Gilbert Apodaca, Don Fant, and Michael Berta. Doubles competition was held on day one. Don Fant teamed up with Dennis Sauer of Sun Lakes, while Michael Berta teamed up with Frank Bruckner of Sun Lakes. Don and Dennis, playing in the 60 to 69 division and won the bronze medal. Michael and Frank played in the 70+ division and defeated all their opponents, winning the gold medal. Singles competition was held on day two. Michael Berta played Bill Black in the final. It was great competition and very fun to watch. The first player to win three games would get the gold medal. The match went down to the fifth game with each player having two wins. Michael won the fifth game and took home the gold medal. Gilbert played some top players and still managed to win the bronze medal. You don't have to be a tournament level player to enjoy ping pong. Just come out and join in the fun Monday through Friday at 10:30 am and Saturday at 11 am.
