46 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2015 Racquet Club The Racquet Club had a sparse turnout for its end-of-the- month Play Day, because of the cold and threatening weather. Bundled up participants included Irve, Romy, Syed and Diana, Howard L., Padoo, Tina, Hilario. Mickey and Howard Nelson wandered out to the courts eventually, and stayed just long enough to unload a grab bag of stuff on winner Padoo. This was good, because previously Padoo didn't have any stuff. With the prize package awarded, the Nelsons puttered off to Smitty's for some warm porridge. Then the rains came, chasing everyone else off the courts and into shelter. Despite March beginning with a rainy weekend, April can be expected to bring some beautiful spring weather and great conditions for tennis. With tennis activity picking up, it is a good time to revisit some court courtesies and etiquette. Let's take a few tennis ideas from "tennis.about.com." For example, with more players wanting to use the courts, we can speed things up a bit with better ball management. It is recommended that if the server needs a ball, the player closest to a ball should get it and send it to the server. The ball should be sent to the server so that he/she can catch it easily in one hand. Never hit the ball hard back to the server's side where he/she will have to go collect it at the fence. Making the server pick the ball up off the ground when it could have been sent back with an easy bounce is rude, and for some of us any extra bending is literally a pain. One more reminder is that with the courts getting more use, it will be helpful if social chatter is engaged in without disturbing players on the adjacent court. Though the pros expect silence from the paying audience, our games are social as well as athletic, so we're not going to be silent, but we can endeavor to avoid distracting other players. Paribas week commenced with the McEnroe Charity Event inviting super stars from the past. Andy Roddick, James Blake, Ricky Leach, Lindsey Davenport, Tracy Austin, and some others. It was a great evening for tennis and their charities, with the Lyons, Levines, Martins, Sturners and Steve H. in attendance. Reminder, the Play Day will be on the last Saturday of the month starting at 8:30 am. Club website: www.fsbrc.org. ~ Steven Hovey Left: Members at the Paribas modeling our new FSBRC gear.
