8 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2015 Did You Know? By Bobbie Eckel DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 17 IS WORLD JUGGLER'S DAY? Juggling as an entertainment form has been around for thousands and thousands of years. Common objects for juggling include balls, clubs, plates, rings and flaming sticks. Good jugglers can handle up to ten balls at a time. Medieval times in Europe were replete with jugglers, many of whom made their living by entertaining others for a fee. The modern form of juggling is the multi-tasking which is done by office workers who are keeping several projects going at the same time. For those of you who are not yet completely retired, I am sure that you can relate to this format. As an afterthought, when you are retired, you may be doing the same kind of juggling of recreational responsibilities. Scary thought, isn't it? DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 6 IS NATIONAL YO-YO DAY? There is some speculation that the yo-yo actually originated in China between 500 and 1000 B.C. However, we know for sure that Donald Duncan, Sr., an American businessman, popularized the toy in this country in the early 1900's. How many of you remember the Duncan Yo-Yo? Were you able to do many of the yo-yo tricks? The sixth of June was established as National Yo-Yo Day in honor of Duncan's birthday. Three presidents (Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon) demonstrated their yo-yo expertise for the public. An astronaut, Jeffrey Hoffman took a yo-yo into space on the shuttle Atlantis in 1992. According to the website Holiday Insights, the world's largest yo-yo weighs 256 pounds and is an exhibit at the National Yo-Yo museum. (Do you think it was created for Paul Bunyan?) DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 9 IS DONALD DUCK DAY? The ninth of June was selected to commemorate the cartoon character's debut in 1934. He starred in a Disney cartoon called "The Wise Hen." An interesting bit of trivia is that Donald Duck has a middle name. Internet research into the origin of this famous comic creature reveals that his full name is Donald Fauntleroy Duck, but I could not find an explanation for the name Fauntleroy! DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 25 IS LOG CABIN DAY? This day was created on June 25, 1986, as an attempt to bring awareness to America about the life in a much simpler time. The Log Cabin Society and the Bad Axe Historical Society convinced the Michigan legislature to create a day which will encourage people to appreciate the efforts and lives of the early settlers. In the process of checking out this day, I discovered that the Bad Axe Historical Society centers in a small city called Bad Axe in Michigan. Apparently the name of the city is derived from the early settlers finding a well-used axe on the site of a proposed road through Huron County in Michigan. The finding was recorded and name stayed. Interesting juxtaposition with log cabins!
