8 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2015 | RECREATION DEPARTMENT EXCURSION SIGN-UPS: All new excursions are not released for sign-up until the FIRST DAY OF THE MONTH BEGINNING AT 8 AM. If the first falls on a Saturday or Sunday then sign-ups will begin on the following Monday. If a holiday falls on the first day of the month, sign-ups will begin the next day. WAITING LIST POLICY: The waiting list is created by the Rec. Dept. for sold out events/excursions. This list is used (in order of registration) when the attendee has to cancel due to illness, doctor's appointment, etc. The waiting list is not used for additional sign-ups for secondary excursions that are scheduled due to their popularity. Contact the Rec. Dept. if you have any questions about either of these two policies. WE ACCEPT CHECKS ONLY. You can register up to 4 people (including yourself ) per check per household, payable to Sun Lakes Country Club. All Recreation Classes, Excursions, and Special Events are open to residents only, unless otherwise specified. Due to some of the excursion refund policies, and to keep cancellations down to a minimum, we ask those who wish to sign up for an excursion to please check your calendar for prior engagements prior to signing up for excursions. REFUND POLICY: 1. Cancellations made 30 days prior to the departure date of an excursion or special event will qualify for a full refund, unless otherwise specified. 2. Cancellations made after the 30 day refund deadline are not refundable. However, if an excursion or event has sold out and there is a wait list, the Recreation Department may issue a refund if the ticket can be resold from the wait list. Thank you! EXCURSIONS Del Mar Race Track Wed., Aug. 19, 10 am - 7:30 pm, $37 pp. Spend the day at Del Mar Racetrack, where Bing Crosby was there to greet the first fan through the gate as Del Mar opens, the famous Seabiscuit-Ligaroti match race was held on Aug. 12, 1938 and it drew 20,000 to the track and a nationwide radio audience. Also, a young rider out of Texas sets a Del Mar record of 52 wins, his name is William Lee Shoemaker, and his history and that of the track will become entwined thereafter. Come on down today, where the "Surf Meets The Turf " and enjoy a day of beautiful weather, good eats and fast horses! The gates open at 12 pm and your admission today also includes clubhouse seating and a daily program. Lunch will be on your own, and the first post starts at 2 pm. Try your luck at the Trifecta or just enjoy the day. We will depart for home after the last race. And away we go! EXCURSION SIGN UPS: MON., JUNE 1, 8 AM Cruising the Colorful Coast in Newport Beach Wed., Aug. 26, 9 am - 4:30 pm. They call it the "Colorful Coast" – with its picturesque waterfront homes, cheerful gardens and shimmering blue harbor. It's Newport Beach, and you'll spend the day exploring all she has to offer. You'll stop first at the bright and cheery Sherman Foundation Library and Gardens for a guided tour. Within this two-acre horticultural paradise, you'll encounter lovely botanical gardens of tropical flora and fauna as well as a fun "touch and smell" garden. Next stop is for lunch at the Harborside Restaurant. As the name suggests, this restaurant overlooks Newport Harbor making it the perfect setting for your coastal tour. Following lunch, you'll climb aboard one of the Fun Zone's comfortable boats for a cheerful harbor cruise. You'll set sail for a 45-minute cruise in Newport Harbor and be entertained with live narration from the captain as you cruise past magnificent waterfront homes and some of the most spectacular yachts on the West Coast. Lunch includes your choice of Chicken Caesar salad, Poached salmon with rice pilaf or Yankee pot roast with mashed potatoes all served with fresh baked bread, dessert and coffee, tea or soft drink. Santa Monica's Farmers Market Wed., Aug. 5, 8 am – 4 pm, $28 pp. Escape the desert heat for the day and shop in Santa Monica's downtown and weekly Farmer's Market. There is nothing quite like wandering the colorful aisles of the Santa Monica Farmer's Market. The textures, smells and visuals! The Wednesday market is the largest and the one most often frequented by local star chefs. Local restaurants make weekly appearances in a food tent. The market is known for its rich bounties of vegetables, baskets of freshly cut flowers, live music, breads, cheeses, and delicious food samplings, and not to forget the quaint little eateries and specialty shops splashed here and there, with their unique "one of a kind" items that makes shopping a delightful experience.
