Neighborhood Watch 26 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2015 Our July Community Awareness Series on water was well attended. Tony Lara, Director, Beaumont- Cherry Valley Water District, presented information about proposed water rate increases, possible fines and schedules and ways to conserve and save money and water. The Community Awareness Series continues on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6:30 pm in the Lodge Ballroom. San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital Board Chair Dr. Jerilynn Kaibel and CEO Mark Turner will be here to discuss the hospital's new affiliation with Loma Linda Hospital and the impact on our community. The National Night out Event has been scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 5:30 pm in the Lodge Ballroom. Sign ups for the evening potluck will be available in August at the Lodge. The Neighborhood Watch Steering Committee feels that more information will be available from the local police department as well as the City Council at a September meeting. Neighborhood Watch New Resident Committee held a short get-to-know-your-neighbors coffee for residents of Saddlerock, Tattlesall and Heatherwood Streets. New Block Captain Andi Henderson and Judy Irving, new residents chairperson, provided refreshments for the information session. A question and answer session was also held. If you are interested in co- sponsoring a similar session for your new area, please contact Judy Irving, (951) 922-2525. Future plans for Neighborhood Watch include an orientation and review session for new and current block captains in the next few months. If you want to serve as a block captain, please complete and tear off the bottom of the Neighborhood Watch flyer in the lobby and return the information to the Lodge desk. An envelope has been set up by the Neighborhood Watch Steering Committee to collect this information. Date and time of the session will be printed in the Breeze . The Steering Committee is very busy ensuring that the Four Seasons Community has timely opportunities on important community awareness topics, welcome sessions for our new neighbors, trainings for block captains, and planning social events for all Four Seasons. If you are interested in contributing to the activities of our dynamic committee, please call Anita Worthen or fill out the bottom section of the flyer and turn in to the Lodge desk also. Reminder: Our general meetings are open to ALL residents. Block captains please encourage your residents to come to the general meetings. Remember, if you see something, say something. ~ Judy Irving You may be reluctant to brag to your neighbor that you have Pigsqueak in your garden. Try using their other name, "Elephant Ears." Or, you can even try, Bergenias and they will think you are mispronouncing Begonias. Bergenias are clump- forming perennials primarily grown as a ground cover. They form large rosettes of leathery, glossy, toothed, rounded, dark green leaves (to 10" long by 8" wide) which are heart-shaped at the base. Leaves typically form a thick, slowly-spreading clump of foliage to 12" tall. Foliage turns purplish-bronze in winter. Small dark pink flowers in dense panicles appear within or above the foliage on stout stalks to 16" tall in April. Leaves are often used in floral arrangements. Also commonly called pig squeak because of the noise produced by rubbing a leaf between thumb and finger. Bergenias can be grown in Zones 4-10. They adapt to almost any soil (important at Four Seasons) and tolerate full sun but prefer light shade. Moisture affects their growth rate and as drought tolerant plants will expand slowly. Foliage is very thick, similar to a succulent, and bright green, except in fall and winter, when it turns bright, almost glowing shades of bronze and scarlet. Once started, new plants can be started by dividing clumps after about three years and expanding the bed. ~ Len Tavernetti Beaumont Blooms Bergenias grow well in Four Seasons
